Vishvaksena

Namaskaram.

I understand, Vishvaksena is carrying out the commands directly from Perumal. He is assigned important jobs and placed after Perumal and Thayar in the hierarchy. We find Garuda bhagwan in Perumal’s temples. But Vishvaksena idol is not there in most of the temples.

This thought has flashed today after worshipping the Perumal in a temple today. I would like to know the reason behind this.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Namaskaram Jayaram Swami,

With Acharya ThiruvAdi Bhalam and Velukkudi SriKrishnan Swami’s Aasirvadham, there are Archai forms of Sri VishvaksenAr in SriVaishnava Temples, but may not be seen in all temples depending up on the Temple space availability. But Sri Vaishnavas and Vaikhanasas worship Him FIRST before starting any ritual to remove obstacles as seen in Sri Vishnu Sahasranamam 4th line as “……...vighnaṃ nighnanti satataṃ viśhvaksenaṃ tamāśraye…….“. Even though Sri Vishvaksena (known as Vishwaksena Perumal) is the “Commander in Chief (Senai MudhaliyAr or Senadhipadhi)” of the army of Sriman NarayanA and the removal of obstacles,  He is one of the Nithya Sooris and servant to Sriman NarayanA.

In Thiruppati Thirumala, Sri Vishwaksena Temple is located at the northern side of the Main temple, in the Mukkoti Pradakshinam. During the daily worship of BhagavAn Sri Venkateswara, the garlands and flowers (called Nirmalya) from the BhagavAn’s Archai are removed and Sri Vishwaksena is worshipped with them. Before commencement of the annual Brahmotsavam, the Senadhipadhi or Vishvaksena Utsava is performed followed by Ankurarpana. His idol is also taken out in a procession during the Adhyayanotsavam.

Also In Swami RamanujAr Avayava Pravaaham, Swami VishwaksenAr is the ThirumAn Kaappu on Swami RamanujAr’s forehead.

Resp. Velukkudi Krishnan swamy,
Namaskaram.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

ElayaAlwar swamy,

Thanks for the details.

My other point is that, it can be observed Garuda bhagwan sannadhi can be easily located opposite to Perumal unlike Vishvaksena’s.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Namaskaram Jayaram Swami,

Regarding devareer’s further query “……………..My other point is that, it can be observed Garuda bhagwan sannadhi can be easily located opposite to Perumal unlike Vishvaksena’s………….”

With Acharya ThiruvAdi Bhalam and Velukkudi SriKrishnan Swami’s Aasirvadham, there is a reference in Ramanuja Vaibhavam where Swami says RamanujAr says High level Shastra arthams to learned scholars at the same time to ordinary persons like us Swami RamanujAr doesn’t explain in High level complex way instead Swami says in simple terms as “அப்போது ஒரு சிந்தை செய்து ” concept.

Based on this “அப்போது ஒரு சிந்தை செய்து ” concept, Swami RamanujAr has answered this very same question in the past using “அப்பூச்சி காட்டுதல்” example.

அப்பூச்சி காட்டுதல் means, its a game that Supreme SriKrishna BhagavAn during HIS childhood days at Gokulam used to play with HIS friends, by showing HIS four hands suddenly and making it disappear quickly in fraction of a second. HIS friends get mesmerized with SriKrishna’s actions and get confused by asking “did you show four hands?”, then SriKrishna says, “No, I have only two hands, see my hands” . While the kids were trying to come out this clouded confusion, SriKrishna shows again HIS four hands with Sanghu & Chakkram and make it disappear. HE keeps doing this Leelai with HIS devotees.

So SriKrishna does this அப்பூச்சி காட்டுதல் not only with HIS childhood friends but also with all HIS devotees in a bigger scale in different ways.

Like Sanghu and Chakkaram are Nithya Sooris and making them Appear and DIsappear. Same way VishwaksenAr is Head of all Nithya Sooris, and SriKrishna keep VishwaksenAr Archai in some temples (like make it Appear) in Some Temples and don’t keep VishwaksenAr Archai in some temples (like make it disappear) in some temples. The reason is to induce ஏக்கம்/தவிப்பு in devotees mind, so that the Thirst to get Sevai of Nithya Sooris improve in our mind.

To devareer, HE played “அப்பூச்சி காட்டுதல்” with VishwaksenAr, but for some devotees HE plays Appear/Disappear game with Garuda as well, like Garuda is ThiruvAdi of Perumal seen opposite to Perumal Sannidhi, but in some temple the devotees go with same expectation, but instead of Garuda, there will be Anjaneeya Swami Archai form opposite to Perumal Sannidhi, since Hanuman is also called as ThiruvAdi of Perumal. [PS: Some call Garuda as Periya ThiruvAdi, and Hanuman as SIriya THiruvAdi, but Velukkudi Swami has said, both are to be called as “ThiruvAdi” ONLY and there is none bigger or smaller] .

So making Garuda Archai form Appear infront HIS sannidhi in some temples and making Garuda disappear and making Hanuma Archai form appear infront of HIS Sannidhi is all Perumal Leelai “அப்பூச்சி காட்டுதல்” .

Based on devareer’s Bhakthi towards Sri VishwaksenAr, instead of devareer’s Step1 signature as “adiyen”, Adyen feel devareer should bump up to the Step3 as “adiyen VishwaksenAr Dasan” as discussed in this thread of good, better, best signature formats.

What is devareer thought process on all these?

ElayaAlwar swamy,

Namaskaram.

Thanks for the details.

I wanted to thank and stop with that so that I will not burden you and take your further time. But, my mind did not allow. Hence continuing.

Regarding the concept on ‘அப்பூச்சி காட்டுதல்’

  1. Agree with the leelai of Lord Krishna.
  2. Regarding the details mentioned for, appearing and disappearing of VishwaksenAr Archai, it appears to be your interpretation. Even otherwise, in this case, though one may state that the ‘pradishtai’ of Archai of any murti is with divine grace, I still feel human involvement exists. Hence, my mind does not accept this concept in this context.

Regarding the thread on ‘adiyen and Adiyen’, I have mentioned my views and do not want to take it further. Hence, I have not responded further. I have a strong feeling of involvement of humility in mentioning ‘adiyen’ regardless of the language or other ways of expression. The signature should not be glossy. This is my personal opinio.

I proposed to change my signature to adiyen Ramanuja dasan sooner, it is a matter of time. Mental efforts are on, physically to be done.

On a side note, whenever I communicate to Ramajujar, I address him Ethiraja in singular. (same with Perumal also, since long. I do not feel it to be incorrect, since it occurs spontaneously and automatically. I heard an enpani audio in this regard).

Srimate Ramanujaya Namaha

I have seen Sriman Vishwaksena vigraha in many temples. Although not visible like Sriman Garuda, he stands outside usually. Sri Vishwaksena is usually inside the temple. So mostly due to it, he is not seen.

adiyen had some thought to visit Sowmya Damodara Perumal temple at villivakkam, for some time. I visited that temple quite some time back. I found sannadhi for Vishvaksenar. Though, I visited few times earlier, I have not observed properly. I understand after reaching home that it is the thirunatchatram for Vishvaksenar. Happy to note.
