A honest question about training young kids on our scriptures

Shri Velukkudi Swamigalin Porpadhangalukku Adiyen Srinivasanin Aneka Koti Namaskarangal

Swami. My son is 4.5 years old. I have only one son. He is very much interested in Pooja punaskaarams, Bakthi on Lord Govinda, Gnana and Moksha.

Adiyen and Adiyen’s father are already teaching him our Epics like Ramayana, Mahabharatha and some Purana stories, with an intention to bring him in spiritual line.

But, whenever he sees Adiyen reading scriptures like Upanishads, Brahma Sutras, Vedanta etc, he insists Adiyen to teach him Upanishads also.

I am bit hesitant because, my friends advice this is not right age for Upanishads or other higher scriptures. They say, if I train him on Upanishads from now on, he may tell his teachers one day, “What is the use of these school studies or getting marks? Moksha is my life goal and I am not interested in school, college or degree.” They say rigorous spiritual training may stop his material progress and advises Adiyen to restrict only to Puranas and Epics till he completes degree.

What should I do as a father in this situation?

His spiritual knowledge is already abundant and he is one step ahead of Adiyen. Let me give an example. I jovially asked him one day, “Does only God exist?” He replied, “No. We are different but functioning by God.” Talks over. I spilled some laddu on floor and could not clean. So, I took a wet cloth and cleaned it. He himself came to me and said, “Understand that you are not capable of doing anything yourself. If you got the idea of wiping laddu with wet cloth, that also comes from Govinda who is your Antaryami.”

In many instances like this, Adiyen was astonished by the way he speaks Vedanta. To such a child, what should Adiyen do as a father now? Whether to restrict training him only on Puranas and Epics in form of stories or start preaching him Upanishads, Gita, Brahma Sutras etc.

In later case, how can I retain his interests in routine life also?

Kindly forgive Adiyen for long question. It is to give background clearly. Kindly advise Adiyen and bless me to come out of this confusion and get into the act as appropriate in elevating Adiyen’s child.

Danyosmi Swamy. Aneka Koti Namaskarams.

Adiyen’s policy is, Epporul Yaaryaar vai ketpinum apporul meiporul kanbadharivu.

So, response from Devarir is also welcome from Adiyen’s personal perspective. Adiyen don’t know what the forum expects and about Shri Velukkudi Swamy’s thoughts. So, Adiyen stopped responding to others questions. However, Adiyen is ok with reply from all for Adiyen’s question.

It’s good to hear that kids are attracted towards spiritual centers when a city name is recited. Sign of great spiritual progress.

More Adiyen read Upanishads and Vedanta, detachment to current life keeps progressing. When Adiyen’s family cry, Adiyen is unable to attach again to give happiness to them. Adiyen could not live to their expectations and could see some kind of gap in relationships too. Family members are not happy as Adiyen started maintaining some distance. Adiyen is interested to involve him in higher studies but only worry was, he should not get detached before even he starts his life. Just 4.5 years. However, Adiyen is training him on Epics and Puranas. He also does Abishekam, poojas, archanai etc to Lord. Will try to slowly tell him Upanishads also.

He has a strong belief on the Lord. One year back, Adiyen booked tickets to Tirupathi. Adiyen’s son was suffering from loose motion despite giving medicines. In our family, we all were confused whether to proceed or cancel tickets. He jumped in and said, “Appa. Nee Govindha mela nambikka vachindirukkiya illaya? Nambikka irundha apparam en thayangara? Vaa purapaduvom. Ellam Govinda Pathupar.” So, such kid definitely deserves all kinds of studies which Adiyen may or may not give as Adiyen is also in learning phase only.

Adiyen understand that personal questions cannot be answered by Swamy. But, thought the response may be useful to all, as every father who wants their child to travel in right spiritual path may not know where to start and how to start like Adiyen.

However, thanks for detail explanation and taking time to respond.

Hare Krishna!

Aneha Koti Namaskaram Swami: In Adiyen’s humble opinion, this question may need a in-person discussion.

However, in Adiyen’s capacity as a father, suggest to teach him both (material and spiritual) and let ‘him’ decide which way to go.

Ellavatrirkum mel, Bhagavan thiru-ullam epadiyo, apadiye nadakkum! Naam edho kanaku poduvom, Bhagavan sometimes, subject-ye mathiduvaar saying now its not maths but science. Just sharing Adiyen’s own experience.

Aneka Koti Namaskarams Swamy

Thank you for response Swamy.

Yes. It’s true that everything happens as per Sankalpam of Lord only. In this case, even before my wife was pregnant, I received message that first child will be male and I have to name him after Lord Ranganathar. We chose the name Sarangan and this was also approved as satisfactory. There are many things in background which cannot be disclosed in public forum. It will not look nice also to speak own histories where I am supposed to raise my doubts.

I am 100% confident that he will be in spiritual path. I was worried only whether to train him on higher spiritual studies now as he asks or later.

I have no way to meet Shri Velukkudi Swamy in person to raise such doubts and this forum is only way to contact Swamy or raise questions. Just thought it may be helpful to other fathers also if Swamy gives some guidelines.

However, I do understand that this has to be dealt personally. I will consider your valuable advises.

I request Shri Velukkudi Swamy and others to forgive Adiyen if my question has led to some Sankatam and difficulty in answering.

All glories to the Lord. All demerits to Adiyen.

Srimathe Rangaramanuja Mahadesikaya Namaha

Even adiyen bored of this material life but Perumal melayum full interest illa. Na avaraye yemathindrukken. UrangAvilli dasar ku kamichA madhri enakku kanna kamikka matengarar. Adiyen think am kailvalyan. “Thaan Unni Pasu” like my Andavan said once in some context.
Podhum indha life.

In the age of online rummy advertisement direct in our bedroom TV it’s very difficult to be spiritual.

So better more attached to Perumal activities. That’s why I keep commenting here as am afraid Andavan’s Krishna Maya will swallow me.

Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy MUST do one EnPaNi against these online Rummy in my opinion.

Shri Velukkudi Swamigalin Thiruppadhangalukku Aneka Koti Namaskarams.

Listened to Enpani audio today. Adiyen guess this question is also addressed in a polished way. Kindly forgive if Adiyen mis-understood.

Adiyen’s take away from the audio is, it is not enough if we preach scriptures but we shall also follow them and act as a role model to give them confidence to follow scriptures.

Danyosmi Swamy. The advise is well received.

Aneka koti namaskarams

Swami has been telling this for years. In general, first a father should do Sandhyavandhanam. Then only he can ask his son to follow.
