Why Vigrahams of Valmiki, VedaVyasar or Parasharar not present in SriVaishnavite temples?

Hello Swamys,

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namah,

Namaskarams to Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy and to all Swamy’s in the group.

We are aware that our entire Sri-Vaishnava Sampradayam was built on top of the vaidika scriptures like Brahma Sutram, Sri Valmiki Ramayanam, Sri Vishnu Puranam, Sri Vishnu Dharma, other puranas and Mahabaratham.

All these sources have been extensively researched by our Purva-acharyas, many commentaries were written and the authors of these scriptures like Sri Valmiki, VedaVyasar, Parashar have been extolled and praised by our purva-acharyas in their commentaries. For example, Swamy Ramanujar praising Veda-Vyasar in Sri-bashyam and Swamy Alavandar praising Parasarar in Stotra Ratnam. There maybe more examples which adiyen is not aware of.

Given this, why the deities of this big big sages are not present in sri-vaishnavite temples to acknowledge , paying respect and bowing before them for their contributions? The scriptures written by these sages have been the foundation on which Sri-Vaishnava Sampradayam has been built further.

Just wanting to understand to get the correct perspective.

Please forgive adiyen if the above question is fully ignorant or arrogant or futile.

Dear abhigau Gautam BhagavAta,


It is a great question. However there are some temples in South India for these Mahans/Rishis.


There is Valmiki Temple in Thiruvanmiyur Chennai.




There is Veda Vyasar Tapovanam Temple in Sembakkam near Thambaram Chennai.



There could be Parasarar Maharishi Shrine in Thiruvelliangudi Perumal Temple. There is Parasarar Pushkarani due to the Sthala Puranam.



Also, Swami Alavandar’s one of the wish in HIS last minute before reaching HIS Acharya TiruvAdi was to name the DESERVING DEVOTEES with names of Parasara Maharishi and Veda Vyasar. Swami Alavandar’s wish was accomplished by Swami Ramanujar by Swami Ramanujar naming Swami KoorathAzhvan’s two Deserving Son’s as Parasara Bhattar and Veda Vyasa Bhattar.


In addition to the above, If BhagavAtas question is why Veda Vyasar or Parasara Maharishi or Valmiki Maharishi deities are not popularly seen in ALL the south Indian Sri Vaishnava Temples, except in few places, then we can only derive the reason as below based on our own understanding from upanyasams as below:



Though these great Legends/Rishis preach Spiritualism, they themselves follow Upasana Maargham for Moksham (“Upayem/Route” to Moksham is their Own effort and “Upeyam/Destination” is BhagavAn’s Lotus Feet), which is good Maghma which requires long life like more than 60,000 years or so to follow it correctly like in Krita or Treta Yugham, but difficult to apply in Kali Yugham.

So, the prescribed shortest path to Moksham in this Kali Yugha as per Shastras is Sharanagathy Margham (Upayam & Upeyam both are BhagavAn Lotus Feet which is nothing but the Lineage of Alwar’s/Acharya’s ThiruvAdi).


So, if we keep such Rishis deities in all SriVaishnava Temples, then at some point, we ordinary devotees will have a tendency to follow what they were following for Moksham like Upasana Margham instead of Sharanagathy, and we cannot achieve Moksham in that path in this Kali Yugha due to decreased life span, fluctuating Shraddhai, diluted Acharam/Anushtanam. So, our PoorvAcharyas like Swami Ramanujar Honors them in the Spiritual teachings/Granthams etc only… but our PoorvAcharyas may not have entertained having their deities in Temples except in few places, Instead we have Deities of Alwars and Acharyas Popularly in all SriVaishnava Temples just for our benefit to narrow our Thinking and Focus on Sharanagathy Margham, so we could reach Moksham in SAME BIRTH by saying “Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha” as Gauranteed by NamPerumal (SriRama) in Sharanagathy Gadhyam.

Sharanagathy can be done for different puposes not just for Moksham. Like Draupathi did Sharanagathy for Vastram (not for Moksham), so at the end of her life, she went to Swargham and not SriVaikuntam.

Same way, Vibheeshana did Sharanagathy to escape from his brother Ravana’s torture and also he did Sharanagathy for Rajyam. So SriRama did PattAbhishekam to VIbhishana, and Vibhishana didnit do Sharanagathy for Moksham.

“Vibheeshana saranagathi and Draupathi saranagathi are not complete saranagathi; only conditional saranagathi” this idea you have presented is new to me. So I would like to request you to confirm the source of this conclusion please. Have you heard from any bonafide source (acharaya in our sampradaya or any other bonafide Vaishnava sampradaya) which explicitly states that their saranagathi was only conditional, or is this conclusion arrived by your own analysis based on hearing from some acharya.

If it is explicitly stated so by some acharya then I will accept it; if it is your analysis and conclusion, then I will take it with a pinch of salt until I get it verified by any acharya.

Kindly confirm the source of your conclusion.

Source from Swami’s discourses and GuruParamparai. But, VIbhishana was a Dharmikan though brother of Ravan, and VIbhishana did Sharanagathy for SriRama Kainkaryam as well. That’s why, our Poorvacharyas portray a lot about VIbhishana Sharanagathy as an example to show how to do Sharanagathy, though the end result was different as PattAbhishekam and Sri Ramanuja Kainkaryam (though the ultimate purpose if life),
but He didn’t do it for Moksham.

Swami has said that, we should elevate ourselves from Upanyasams to Kalakshepams if we need to know the actual Swapedhesa Arthams (clear/in-depth knowledge) rather than just knowing Saamanya Arthams (simple straight forward meanings) from Enpani or Upanyasams.

So, Please check with Swami or BhagavAtas own Acharyan or with other Upanyasakars for Kalakshepa Arthams.

Moreover, Swami has said that Srimadh Ramayanam us also called as “Sharanagathy Shastram”, there are numerous examples if Sharanagathy and the purpose for it is done.

Poorvacharyas says, from each type of Sharanagathy, we learn each items.

Like there is a list criteria after Sharanagathy called “MAHAVISHWASAM” on BhagavAn’s lotus feet, like whatever happens to us, we should have FULL FSITH that it is for our own good and BhagavAn will save us. In Sugreeva Sharanagathy on SriRama’s lotus feet for Vaali vadham, he doubhted the calibher of SriRama after Sharanagathy (NO MAHAVISHWASAM) and tested SriRama if HE is capable or not. The result us, in the 1st fight between Sugreeva and Vaali, SriRama let it go and Sugreeva was veaten-up like hell by Vasli. Second time, Sugreeva didn’t doubht SriRama’s calibher after getting advice from a BhagavAta (Sri Lakshmana), and had MAHAVISHWASAM on SriRama’s lotus feet, so Sri Ramanuja killed Vaali due to Sugreeva Sharanagathy and following the post criteria MAHAVISHWASAM, though the Sharanagathy is not for Moksham.

Same way, Draupathi did Sharanagathy on SriKrIshna’s lotus feat during the Vastra haranam, but she believed her 5 husband’s (actually 5womens) will save or the older senior WOMEN’S like Bhishma, Drona, Dhridharashtra etc…will save her, but in vain and they all were watching. Finally when the attrocious women ‘dhushassnan’ started doing his act, then Draupathi had MAHAVISHWASAM on SriKrIshna’s lotus feet with her Anjali hands raised, so BhagavAn saved her.

Though these Sharanagathy was not done for Moksham, the lesson learned is, how we can follow the post Sharanagathy criteria MAHAVISHWASAM on BhagavAn’s lotus feet.

If we don’t follow the post Sharanagathy criteria, then our Sharanagathy (prapatthi) WILL NOT YIELD RESULTS, even though the purpose is for Moksham or Material benefits.

நம்ம வேஷ்டியை இல்லை புடவையோ யாராவது இழுத்தால், அப்பா தெரியும் நம்ம MAHAVISHWASAM. So we know that don’t have MAHAVISWASAM at all.

Hence, for Moksham, due to our incapability to follow 1) Upasana Maargham, and due to incapability to follow the 2) Sharanagathy maargham post criteria MAHAVISHWASAM, SriRama the SUPERSTAR gives the 3rd Maargham to Moksham as 3) “Acharya/BhagavAta Abhimaanamey Uddharakam“, means relying on Swami Ramanujar’s Krupai, since we all are Sinners and incapable to follow any Shatram prescribed maarghams for Moksham.

Hence, Poorvacharyas say, we shouldn’t judge others as “who will go to Moksham”, rather we should start thinking that the Same KRUPAI of Swami Ramanujar that is showered on us also gives Moksham to others whether they DID OR DIDNOT do Samasratanam/Prapatthi/Pancha Samskaram, it doesn’t matter, since the key is “RAMANUJA SAMBHANDHAM” gives Moksham, and Panchasamskaram/Prapatthi/ssmasrayanam is ONLY one of the way to get Ramanuja Sambhandham for Moksham. Swami has said, There are total 15~18 ways to get Ramanujaya Sambhandham. So SriRama gives Moksham to anyone who has Grattitude towards Swami Ramanujar, irrespective of

This 3rd Maargham for Moksham is called
“AcharyaAbhimaanamey Uddharakam”.

So we all present Panchasamskaram/Prapatthi/Samasrayanam people need to remember these, and live humbly respecting every others, irrespective of their appearance/kulams/Sampradhayam/religions, since SriRama gives Moksham to anyone who has Grattitude towards Swami Ramanujar, irrespective of Panchasamskaram/Prapatthi/ssmasrayanam.

Thank you for confirming that your post is indeed based on what is explicitly stated by acharyas in Kalashepam. and not self-interpreted.

The main reason that triggered the doubt in me is that your earlier post said Vibheeshana surrendered out of fear for Ravana. I couldn’t get myself to accept this statement because Vibheeshana was bravely urging Ravana himself to submit to Lord Rama. So ‘fear’ is not the motivating factor for him to surrender to Raghava. Vibheeshana was always a devotee of Perumal and his focus was always on doing the right thing. And therefore when it was time for him to make a decision he went straight to Sugreeva and through him approached Raghava.

Regarding Draupadi’s surrender different acharyas have shared insights from slightly different perspectives. So, as long as your answer is based on one of the authentic sources and not self-interpreted, it is good. Thank you.
