While sleeping, which direction should the head be?

Namaskaram swamy 🙏

Since childhood, adiyen have been told that we should not keep our head in the north direction while sleeping, citing the story of how Ganesha got the elephant head (the ganangal had been asked to take the head of the first person/being they come across who was sleeping keeping the head in the north direction).

Adiyen came across some messages too mentioning about the scientific reasons behind why we shouldn’t keep our head in the north direction while sleeping.

But, adiyen believe that I have listened to Velukkudi Krishnan swamy mentioning about not sleeping with the head in the south direction. Please kshamikkavum swamy if I have misunderstood. It made sense to me as south is the direction of Yama. Also, when an atma departs, I believe the body is placed with the head in the direction of south.

So, adiyen started to avoid the south direction too along with the north, as elders had asked us to avoid the north.

Recently, in Srimad Bhagavatam audio number 264, it was mentioned that one should avoid north and west directions to keep the head while sleeping. Does that apply only for that specific vratam?

Please clarify which directions are ok to keep our head while sleeping 🙏

Adiyen

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Shastras say Human Body is designed as a Kaantham (Magnet) with Head as North pole and Feet as South pole by Almighty GOD. HE has created the same concept in all areas of HIS material creation, with Bhoomi (Earth) having North pole and South pole. So when our body’s head (North pole) aligns with Earth North pole, our body energy will be drained through out the sleep and one feels terribly tired when they get up in the morning, since Earth’s North pole is superiorly powerful, same as a weaker magnet with it’s North pole brought near a bigger magnets North pole will keep Repelling the smaller magnet away. Science is only telling the same Shastras in English format to some extent which were initially said in Sanskrit format.

West side keeping head to be avoided since we are sleeping in opposite direction of Earth spinning direction (East to West), so our bodily energy will be utilized thought out the night to overcome the effect, which makes us tired when we get up in the morning.

The ideal direction to keep our head during sleep is East or South for sound sleep and to wake up energetically. However,
yes, Spiritualists inform us to avoid South due to the Yama pattanam.

However this story is fully true for people living in regions around Equator like India. Consider a person standing in India. Their body axis is always 90 degrees to Earth pole axis, so our head will never be in same direction to Earth North pole. So the issue arises only when sleeping, since body axis will be in one of the 4 directions, hence the sleeping rule to be applied by people living in these regions. But this phenomenon is not true for people living in North pole, since their head is always in same direction as North pole while standing, hence people cannot do much activity with continuous energy being drained and cannot survive in North pole irrespective of the cold and few people existence.

Apart from these,
The benefits of a good night’s sleep are manifold and can be encouraged by grateful thoughts washing through our brain before bed.
Much like the ritual of praying before bed, the ritual of keeping a gratitude journal or chanting the things that you are grateful for can help to floor our mind with happy thoughts that promote a sense of peace and rest.
Keeping pre-sleep thoughts upbeat averts the fretfulness and worry that interrupts sleep.

“Above All Things, O’ Almighty GOD, Grant Me a Grateful Heart”.

Adiyen (ElayaAlwar) Srinivasa (DhoddayacharyAr) Dasan.

Nice explanation.

Thanks swamy for your detailed explanation 🙏 Based on this, the only direction to keep our head while sleeping seems to be east.
