Vikram swamy, namaskaram.

my understanding is, Virakthi refers to detachment (from material desires), and vairagyam refers to determination (to avoid material desires).

We need to have both. In my current state, I do experience virakthi with some of my attachments and avoid them for some time, but sooner or later I fall for it again (because of ruchi from past vasanas). This is because the vairagyam is not strong.

eg. I like mysorepak; I greedily eat 10 mysorepaks; I feel satiated by sweet or experience bad health beacause of high sugar; I determine I will not each mysorepak ever again (virakthi). But after a few days I again see mysorepak and give-in to my desires! (weak vairagyam).

By acharyan anugraham if I persist in my efforts, then I will be able to strengthen my vairagyam and sustain my virakthi, eventually become completely free from the efffect of past vasanas for that desire.

adiyen dasan.

At the same time, there are certain other enjoyments which we avoid not because we have virakthi, but because sastram or acharya has instructed us to do so. eg. many of us have heard from our swamy not to drink coffee and given up driking coffee. This is not because of any virakthi, but simply (blessed) vairagyam to live by sastram or guru’s instruction.

Swamy,
Does dislike and detachment the same?

Virakthi is displeasure right? A height of saturation.
I had enough , enough is enough. No more that stuff.

Eg; If I don’t like bittergourd it is not Virakthi. Though I am detached from it.

So Virakthi cannot be detachment?

Vairagyan: It is to learn to live without. Whether we like it or not. Isn’t it?

For eg: I am diabetic , so not eating Mysorepak is not Virakthi or vairagyam.

I like Mysore Pak, I am not diabetic, yet I don’t eat.

Another example: Though I am hungry on Ekadeshi I don’t eat is Vairagyan.

I need not be detached from Ekadeshi vratham to have vairagyam

Here not eating is not detachment in the context of devareer’s Virakthi.

As I am having for Sriman Narayana Preethi, I am attached to Vratham not detached

I am fed up of eating Mysorepak is virakthi

Adiyen cannot edit above post

emmmmm! from here on I can only make guesses. I checked the dictionary meaning of these two words, and there multiple meanings for both these words, and some of them are common between the two!

Let us request our Swamy to help us understand these two qualities and how to practiese this in our daily life.

Srimate Raamnujaye namaha,

Krishna says in Bhagavat Geeta in many places the importance of being neutral neither like nor dislike (towards material things events and in relationships with people)
I believe this equanimity is vairagyam..( so one who has vairagyam will use these for Krishna s service if required ..else will not)
But avoiding these due to fear of the negative reactions involved in it ..like the fox declaring the unreachable grapes as sour..is virakti..

Virakthi is unstable..there is no positive engagement..vairagyam is stable as the soul is positively engaged.

Swami,

This is purely adiyen’s interpretation.

Yes enpanifan swami’s answer is more correct. Bhakti can be of any intense emotion as our swami said. It can be intense anger, happiness, fear or sadness but shoud be directed towards bhagavan. And the devotee must accept bhagavan. So virakthi is a state of intense displeasure over material things. This is a form of bhakti.

But in vairagyam, you win over the emotions itself and is more natural ruchi and karunai towards others. Meaning, you don’t have any of the above emotions – intense anger or fear or happiness. You are in a neutral state neither happiness nor sadness. But you can display any such emotions at will. If you will to show anger, you can show. If you will to show happiness, you can show. So this is an elevated state because emotions help us to develop involvement in bhakti but now you don’t have any emotions to help you in your involvement. You have more mental strength and can exhibit bhakti without emotions.
More of thapa shakti.

“So virakthi is a state of intense displeasure over material things. This is a form of bhakti.”
Why should Virakthi lead to Bhakthi?
Can’t it be kaivalyam self pleasure?

Bhakthi= BhAvam=Emotions

Bhakthi cannot be emotionless.
May be it’s NyAnaYogam or something I don’t know

Fantastic Swamy

“But in vairagyam, you win over the emotions itself and is more natural ruchi and karunai towards others”

Natural Ruchi means primordial association with paramAthmA va Swamy?

Adiyen heard we have come very far from truth.

It is mentioned in HiranyaGarbha it seems, someone told me.

Swami,

Again adiyen’s interpretation

Bhakti can be defined as “constantly relating to bhagavan in anyway”

So in virakthi, displeasure over material things makes us constantly think about supreme bhagavan and think less about material things because you hate material things. And we like bhagavan more. Even if we don’t like bhagavan but only hate material things, then also bhagavan will consider as we have started to hate material things.

This small hate will slowly release u from the loka ruchi one might have. Constant bhakti will lead to Vairagyam. Vairagyam is the final step of bhakti. In vairagyam, you are not attached to material things, but let your karma happen for the sake of it.

In vairagyam, you don’t get entire natural state like a yogi. But an intermediate state where you have a lot of mental strength, can restrain yourself and more. Bhakti is especially meant to develop these qualities – sense control, clear knowledge, etc. But for many people, life ends with following bhakti alone. They may or may not attain these good qualities.

One who attains to these good qualities permanently and can lead a neutral state is vairagyam.

In vairagyam you can display bhakti but at will and out of the knowledge and gratitude to bhagavan. Not that emotions will not be there. What adiyen means is in aspiring bhaktas, mental strength is based on emotions like these. But in vairagyam, full mental strength is there, so emotions does not help you to attain something but is an expression of your gnana.

Iniku aradhanam nalla nadantha namkku manasukulla oru sandhosam irukum. This sandhosham helps us to face life situations.
But with vairagyam, they can face life situations without any support like nalladhu ketadhu. Because you have passed that stage. And simple express knowledge with love.

In simplest of words, by following bhati we attain vairagyam. Bhakti leads to Vairagyam
