Srimad Bhagavatham – How Puranam In An Itihasam?

Adiyen found this question convincing by a Shaivaite. If Bhagavatham is a purAnam how did it feature first in Mahabharata itihasam?

Not sure how Bhagavatham is in Itihaasam. As far as Adiyen knows, Bhagavatham is one of the 18 puranaas and is not part of Itihaasas.

Itihaasas : written at the time when incidents happen

puraanas : written much later.

Veda vyasa Bhagavan wanted to write on Bhagavan Krishna. He wrote Mahabharatham. After completing he felt dissatisfied. He felt he had wanted to focus on Bhagavan but ended up writing so many unwanted details. Dissatisfied with writing Mahabharatham, he then compiled Bhaagavatham which is a purana.

PurAnam = Even as per Velukkudi Swami’s discourse purAnam means Very Old. That’s why it’s called purAnA. So ithihAsas take more precedence.

IthihAsa happened nearby when compared to purAnA.

Srimad BhAgavatham is based on Hari vamsam it seems.

It deals Krishna Charitra that includes chAndhogya Upanishad vAkya etc etc

It starts like this
VedaVyas Vyas not happy after writing lengthy Mahabharata, after the instructions of NArada Muni, sat down to write Srimad BhAgavatham.

In that, Sukhar preaching to Parikshit after event of war.

(Please correct me if wrong)

It’s all about Krishna. Krishna Leela continues in Mahabharata.

Then how come Srimad BhAgavatham a seperate purAnam altogether?

Veda Vyasa wanted to focus much on Bhagavan but could not do so in Mahabharatham. That’s why Srimad Bhagavatham was born. It’s similar to Vishnu purana. Vishnu Purana is also called Purana Ratna ( Gem among puranas ). These 2 puranas are considered to be most perfect puranaas as they convey the same message that vedas convey.

A purana needs to have  the following 5 lakshanas

  • Sarga ( creation )
  • Prati sarga ( dissolution )
  • Vamsa ( about surya, chandra vamsa . who were born in these vamsas )
  • Manvantra ( About manu who ruled under the particular period and his  vamsam )
  • vamsanu charitham ( sub vamsams )

Srimad Bhagavatham has these 5 lakshanas and is rightly called a Purana. Hope this clarifies.

Sri:
Dhanyosmi for answering. So, Srimad Bhagavatham was born after IthihAsa. Which is confirmed as per devar’s answer. Adiyen is fine about purAna lakshana but wanted to understand what qualifies or differentiates a purAnA from an ithihAsa.

So, Srimad Bhagavatham is born after Mahabharata which signifies purAna is not older than IthihAsa as Swami used to quote.

Kshamikka prarthikkien, this is adiyen’s understanding.

“IthihAsa purAnAbyam vEda samupa brahmayeth” – Remembering this shloka.

Velukkudi quotes:
As per grammar It should have been “purAna IthihAsa byam”

Pu Ra Na only 3 letters
I thi ha sa four letters

As ithihAsam is more recent & significant

It happened like this = IthihAsa

So it takes precedence. Here confusion still persists when it comes to Srimad Bhagavatham.

The Shaivaite is going to the extent of calling Srimad bhAgavatham is a bogus theory. In maha pasupatashtra blog.

Srimatae Ramanujaya Namaha,

Adiyen Dasanudasan.

Ithihasam is written as and when it happens.

Puranam is capturing an OLDER EVENT, doesn’t mean Puranam is older than Ithihasam.

Materialistic example.

There are childhood school photos and family photos and unnecessary companion friends photos ( like Ithihasam, photos taken when it happened / Mahabharatam written as it happened with all unnecessary stories). Later when we are grown up and matured, when we try to compile the older photos (Ithihasam), at that time we eliminate the unnecessary photos and keep the necessary photos as an memorable album (like Puranas, VedaVyasar eliminated unnecessary stories of Mahabharatam and compiled in Srimad Bhagavata puranam as a memeroble album).

Adiyen has a vinappam to Devareer. If devareer is a Prapannan, then Please don’t focus on other blogs. Our focus should only on “Oran Vazhi Guru Paramparai” teachings as reinstated by Swami Ramanujar which is visible to us by Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami’s Upanyasams and Aasirvaadham. If not, this samsaram will drag us to padu kuzhi. Our focus is to get out of this cycle with Acharyar Krupai.

Srimatae Ramanujaya Namaha,

Respected Vikram Swami,

Adiyen’s Dhanda Pranaamatthai Sweekarikka Prarthikkiraen.

Adiyen’s “vinnappam” itself is a big Apacharam that adiyen caused to Devareer. When adiyen said , “If devareer is a Prapannan” adiyen should have realized immediately that Devareer is already Acharyar Sothhu and SriPerumal Sotthu, whom am I to say “vinnappam” to a prapannan. Adiyenai vida mattamaanavan yaarum illai.

As Swami Desikan said in RahasyatrAya saAram, “Athma gunangal illathathaal; Indriya Nigraham illathathaal; Oraey koorain keezh Paampudan vasippadhaal”, adiyen made this mistake by saying “vinappam” and adiyen would like to do AparaAdha Pariharam to Devareer.

Looking at Devareer’s Bhakthi towards PoorvAcharyar’s ThiruvAdigal (Swami Maha Desikan & Swami ManavAla Maamunigal), adiyen has long way to go to attain Devareer’s Nishtai.

Devareer ThiruvAdigalukku Pallaandu,

SriVelukkudi Krishnan Swami adiyenai shamikka prarthikkiraen for adiyen’s ignorance.

Acharyar ThiruvAdigalaey Sharanam.
