Reading sacred texts

Resp. Velukkudi Swami,

Namaskaram.

We are blessed to have several sacred texts like Vedas, upanishads, Bhagavatham, bhagavat gita, divya prabandham etc., They help us to get Spiritual knowledge on self, Creator and many more things. Reading them enhances our Spiritual knowledge and enlightens us. It gives lot of details on atmas, various ‘sareer’, gunas, karmas etc., Regular reading keeps one in constant remembrance on Him which helps in Spiritual journey. Learned Acharya’s / exponents spread the message to the common man also.

I am putting up this query without any intention of hurting any one and just for the sake of getting clarification.

Whether the knowledge gained through these texts will be carried by the atman when it leaves the body?. If it is not so what is the extent to which one can go through them, means whether regular reading and deep analysis is required?. Or is it enough to read and grasp the essence only for the sake of understanding and concentrate on karma as mentioned in the texts.

Expect the query will be cleared.

Regards.

Srimate Ramanujaye NAmaha!

@Jayaram swamy, you are fortunate to have your second question answered by swami in today’s enpani #1805 (#1804 in youtube).

I am posting here few verses from Bhagavat Geeta which resonates the same as What Swami said..”there is no loss in spiritual endeavors”

BG 2.40:

nehābhikrama-nāśo ’sti
pratyavāyo na vidyate
sv-alpam apy asya dharmasya
trāyate mahato bhayāt

In this endeavor there is no loss or diminution, and a little advancement on this path can protect one from the most dangerous type of fear.

Also there is section in chapter 6:

TEXT 40: The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: Son of Pṛthā, a transcendentalist engaged in auspicious activities does not meet with destruction either in this world or in the spiritual world; one who does good, My friend, is never overcome by evil.

TEXT 41: The unsuccessful yogī, after many, many years of enjoyment on the planets of the pious living entities, is born into a family of righteous people, or into a family of rich aristocracy.

TEXT 42: Or [if unsuccessful after long practice of yoga] he takes his birth in a family of transcendentalists who are surely great in wisdom. Certainly, such a birth is rare in this world.

TEXT 43: On taking such a birth, he revives the divine consciousness of his previous life, and he again tries to make further progress in order to achieve complete success, O son of Kuru.

So some devotees who have read and practiced based on scriptures, those concepts/knowledge become easily acceptable to them and they get a jumpstart. Naturally faith in existence of soul and Bhagawan will be there instinctively.

enpanifan swami,

Namaskaram.

I congratulate you for doing a wonderful job and thank you for providing references.

I mentioned below the reasons for posting the query.

1. I heard Velukkudi swami’s discourse on Gita. He mentioned that people following jnana yoga, when take new birth, they start all over again, unlike people following bhakti yoga, when take new birth, they start from where they left in the previous birth.

2. I read a couple of scriptures. I am also spending sometime a day to listen to the scriptures nowadays. I am unable to quote references. Because, I tried to grasp the essence of what I read or hear. Rest I am forgetting even though I do it with concentration. May be age factor or my nature to concentrate only on the essence.

Velukkudi Swami has replied that this knowledge will not be carried away. I was expecting this. But he has aptly mentioned that this knowledge will lead to good qualities and so on, which will be useful further.

Your quote::

“So some devotees who have read and practiced based on scriptures, those concepts/knowledge become easily acceptable to them and they get a jumpstart.”

I have no doubt on the people who read and practice will get a jumpstart in the forthcoming birth. My doubt is only for those who only read.

I think constant rememberence of Him will get a fantastic effect.

I intend to put one more query after sometime, a long time doubt, on ‘can cleaning of samskaras (karmas) by a guru cause improperly diagnosed chronic physical ailment’ based my personal experience. Hope to get swami’s reply for that also.
