While doing Pranayama is it enough just to close the nostrils (or) we should also internally hold our breath while closing the nose?

Sri Ramanuja Muneya Namaha,

Dear Baktha,

Yes, during Pranayama, Sri Velukkudi Swami says that, inhale air through one nose and the air inhaled should be held inside during the period when both the noses are closed, until exhaled through the other nose.

*******************************************************

Here are Swami’s Enpani audios with detailed explanation about its BENEFITS.

Enpani #737 “Physical Excersice and Pranayana”.

Enpani #738 “Yean Mookkai Pidikka Veandum” (why to hold the nose).

Enpani ##739 “Health and Pranayama”.

‘Praana Shakthi’ is an important factor for Healthy Mind & Healthy Body, which comes through Aharam (Food), Water & Air.

Praana Shakthi through Air is received by doing Praanayamam.

Pranayamam helps the Praanan to flow properly through the naadis (nerve), to remove the Azkukku (Malam, unnceccessary elements in our body etc…).

Swami also says, the portion of the nose area that needs to be hold by using our finger for close and open is important, since there are two naadis (nerves) called as “Ida & Pinkala” where the Rajas & Tams gunas are present and these gunas will be controlled by doing Pranayamam and enhances Sathva guna.

So the procedure for doing Pranayamam is more important rather than just doing it. If not, it will not be effective.

Physical exercise helps the Body (Shareeram) to some extent which is also needed, but Pranayaamam needs to be added to our routine life, as it helps to CONTROL both “Body (Shareeram) and MIND” and “enhances Sathva Guna” which supports ourselves ‘the Athma’ to get more blessings from BhagavAn Sriman Narayanan, since Naadi Suddhi happens during Pranayamam.

Procedure for Praanayaamam in short as below. Swami’s says to get with a proper authentic Guru and learn it, since explanations cannot be visualized until taught practically.

[1 cycle is:

a) closing right side nose, inhale PACEFULLY through left side nose (4 counts),

known as “Poorakam”.

b) then hold the breath STEADILY with both noses closed (16 counts),

Mootchai (Air) Ezutthu Nirutthudhal, known as “Kumbhakam”.

c) then exhaling through right side nose SLOWLY (8 counts),

known as “Rechakam”.

d) Do the same using the left side nose closed, inhaling through right side nose, holding the breath with both noses closed & exhaling through left side nose.

Doing Each steps a) thru’ d) makes up “1 cycle”.

1 count means time taken to snap the finger (Chodakku podum neram).

Do the Pranayama in a clean atmosphere only. Otherwise, dust will get into it and lead to some other issues.

*******************************************************

Swami recommends to do Praanayaamam:

* THREE times a day (morning, afternoon and evening),

* “10 cycles each time” as much as possible .

Try to avoid doing Pranayamam after having food.

Swami has said that all Ladies & Gents & Kids are eligible to do Pranayamam. No restrictions.

Only for doing Sandhyavandanam, there are some restrictions.

Swami says many things in these Pranayamam audios, please listen to all.

Thanks for the detailed explanation. I have also heard the 3 relevant enpani audios. But did not hear about the duration of 8:16:8..can you please clarify. ? Also I suppose beginners should not target this ratio from 1st day.

on October 12, 2017

Sorry I should have referred to the ratio as 4:16:8 inhale: hold:exhale..

Sri Baktha Mandharaya Namaha,

(Bakthar’galudan Anbudan Irukkum Swami Ramanujar’ai Vanangukiraen)

Dear Baktha,

That is true.

Swami in Enpani says 1:1:2 ratio (4, 4, 8 counts) for Inhale:Hold:Exhale.

Please follow the Counts 4,4,8 as Swami says in Enpani.

Out of the many things in these Enpani Pranayama audios,

1) Swami also says the ‘MORE YOU HOLD’, the mind doesn’t think anything else, so the ‘Senses (Indriyangal) gets controlled, which helps Our Dyanam on BhagavAn to increase.

2) Swami also mentions in the Enpani to ‘LEARN IT PROPERLY FROM A GURU’ at the end of the EnpaNi audio.

Based on these two Suggestions by Swami,

* Start with 1:1:2 (4, 4, 8 counts) initially. But when to learn from some Gurus also teach depending up the capability of the individual to ‘HOLD MORE’ as per Swami’s 1) suggestion.

* but, the ‘INHALE & EXHALE’ is standard 4 counts & 8 counts, same as Swami says and other Gurus when we go for learning.

* The HOLD varies depending up on individual capability. Either 4 counts, or 8 counts or 12 counts or 16 counts. The more you Hold, the more the “Senses are Controlled”, but DONT’t HOLD Too much that will cause us to Suffocate, So Just do to the ‘HOLD >=4 counts’ based on individuals limit.

**********************************

So, Adiyen mentioned about 1:4:2 ratio (4, 16, 8 counts). So Baktha’s can follow from:

1:1:2 or 1:2:2 or 1:3:2 or 1:4:2 ratios, means,

(4,4,8) or (4,8,8) or (4,12,8) or (4,16,8) counts.

But the Inhale STANDARD should be ‘4’ counts PACEFULLY & Exhale STANDRAD should be ‘8’ counts SLOWLY.

As per “Pathanjai Maharishi” Yoga Soothram, the ‘Count’ is termed as ‘Mathirai’ (Pronouncation is Tamil is same as for ‘tablet’ used for medicine).

So, 1 Mathirai means 1 Count.
