There is a story in GuruParamparai,
Once Swami Ramanujar was walking in SriRangam Kaveri karai, and saw some kids playing, basically replicating how the Aagamam is done inside SriRangam Temple. The kids made SriRanganatha Perumal vigraham made of sand, and took some sand as food and offered to Perumal. Then the procedure inside Temple is to give the Perumal prasadham, Theertham, Shatari 1st to a Jeeyar (Swami Ramanujar) by calling as “JEEYOO”. So, when the kids said the same thing “JEEYOO” to another kid to get the Prasadham after offering the sand as food to the Perumal made of sand, then immediately Swami Ramanujar who was watching the kids game from hiding, came out and fell immediately infront of the Perumal made of Sand, and took the Prasadham in Swami’s Kaavi Vastram with tears on Swami’s eyes and Swami walked away. The kids were surprised to see actual JEYOO Swami Ramanuajr itself got this prasadham. Other Shisyas of Swami Ramanuajr asked, why did Devareer took the kids game seriously and fell infront of the sand, it is not Perumal, since NO Praana Prathistai was done. We have actual SriRanaganatha Perumal inside the Temple after proper PRAANA Prathishtai.
Then Swami Ramanujar Replied as per Poghai Alwar’s ‘Mudhal Thiruvandhadhi paasuram 44,”. ”பகவான் இங்கு உள்ளார் என்று அந்த குழதைகள் அன்புடன் நம்பினார்கள், அதனால் பகவான் அங்கு ப்ரத்யக்ஷமாக இருப்பார் Swami Ramanujar also said, if this is not true, then Poighai Alwar’s paasuram will become a lie. Hence Perumal resides in all Temples where Praana Prathistai is done, and BhagavAn also resides in any place and in any form depending up on one’s own pure Love/Devotion to BhagavAn”.
தமர் உகந்தது எவ்வுருவம், அவ்வுருவம் தானே
தமர் உகந்தது எப்பேர் மற்றபேர் – தமர் உகந்தது
எவ்வண்ணம் சிந்தித்து இமையாது இருப்பரே

ஆழியானம் தமர்.- The devotees (தமர்) of the Lord with Sudarshana Chakra (ஆழியானம் = Sriman NarayanAn),
உகந்தது எவ்வுருவம் – whichever form (எவ்வுருவம்) they like
அவ்வுருவம் தானே – He attains that form;
தமர் உகந்தது எப்பேர் – whatever name His devotees like
மற்ற பேர் – in addition, He takes on that name;
தமர் உகந்தது எவ்வண்ணம் சிந்தித்து – in whatever way His devotees “Like and Think”
இமையாது இருப்பரே – and meditate without break,
அவ்வண்ணம் – He will become that.
So, considering this incident from Swami Ramanujar’s life history and Swami Ramanujar’s explanation about Poghai Alwar’s Paasuram, and going back to devareer’s question “……….my mother bought a small Krishna vigraham from Dwaraka ……………I have been performing aradhanai for Him for around 5 years now. I have not done any prana pratista. Is it ok? Will perumal be in the vigraham or do we have to ask someone to do prana pratishta.”
ANS: Since, BhagavAn is already residing HAPPILY in devareer’s small Krishna Vigraham due to devareer’s Bhakthi (ThiruAardhani in last 5 years), the necessity of additional Praana Prathishtai on this small Krishna Vigraham doesn’t arise at home.
