Pattu during Marriage per Sastram

Namaskaram,

I have a question regarding bride and groom wearing pattu during marriage.  It is found that pattu saree or dhoti is woven by killing silk worms which amounts to Himsa.  Please let us know if it is mandatory to wear pattu during marriage.  How to avoid such sin.

Please let us know.

Thanks

Namaskaram

This is from an another thread in dharma sandeha. Swami has said “Some silk manufacturers process silk only after the natural death of silk worms. If you can get such silk it is fine”

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Dear Narayana97,

As Ram2000 BhagavAta pointed, here is a link to DharmaSandeha, where the ElayaAlwar BhagavAta refers to Swami’s enpani number and the BhagavAta has some additional references of Eco friendly Banana Fiber made sarees that look alike Silk sarees and shirts, veshti made of baba fibers…..

Srimatae Ramanujaya Namaha,

Adiyen Dasanudasan,

Swami’s Enpani #148 (Non Vegeterain In Early..) & #423 (Can We be Vegan…..) says about how to handle the situation when we hear about the milk extracted by torturing cows and silk etc. We can only relate this example to other items like Honey, etc… and follow accordingly. Try to find places where milk or Honey or Silk is extracted without doing any Himsai.

Adiyen has heard that the honeybees in the honeycomb are driven away by the smoke generated by the Thee Pandham (Fire flame Torch) of Neem leaves. However, as far as micro organisms getting killed happens all the time, when we walk, sit, eat etc.. If we use micrscope and see the curd rice, there are plenty of microorganisms, but still we eat, since it is not visible to naked eyes. With BhagaVan’s Krupai, HE blindfolds this thinking with VISHU MAYA, so we can eat our regular prescribed food. Nowadays, instead of Silk Sarees, the trend is changing to Eco-riendly Banana Sarees made from Banana fiber (almost looks like Silk Sarees), which is in-line with our tradition of using Banana fiber to make flower garland for Perumal. If we can find such places where these items are processed without Himsai, that is well and good. But, most of the milk, honey we get is from stores, it is difficult to tell how it is processed. Sometimes, we can see canned milk with labels reflecting “cows not treated with hormones”. Eitherway, when we offer the items as prescribed in shastras for this Yuga to BhgaVan, then the dhosham is eliminated.

However in SriVaikuntam, our life is not time-based, so there is no deterioration or no expiry or no pain etc.. So, all the struggles and temperory happiness that we face here in this samsaram is NO MORE, when we are in Permanent Anandham by doing Nithya Kainkaryam to BhagaVan and ALL.

Please disregard any errors.

Namaskaram,

Thanks so much for the info Ram2000 and Kongilpiratti.  It is highly helpful, as we are trying to slowly come to the path of great Acharyas.

Sorry for the delayed reply

Swami,

My humble opinion…

Quoting from Srimad Bhagavatam, “Jeevo Jeevasya Jeevanam”. All jeevans are dependent on other jeevans for their life and sustenance, in some way or the other.

If himsai is done as prescribed by vedas, dharma sastras and following yuga dharmam, there is no paapam in it.

We all know honey and pattu is even used for tirumanjanam and vastram for archai roopam of bhagawan. Can we say it is a sin?

Practice of non-violence outside the context of vedas is unnecessary and such practices led to  “jaina dharmam” which is not followed by us.

-Adiyen
