Natural Skills

Dear swamy,

What is the stand on natural or inborn skills?
As a sharangatha we are trying to live our best doing dharma and bhakthi with anugraham. But are skills(திறமை) important? Is it necessary?

Adiyen saw my friend drawing very beautifully. After adiyen saw that, feeling dejected that adiyen doesn’t have such skills.
Okay adiyen tried to convince myself that many skills can be acquired. But adiyen have ruchi only in natural skills as they are god given right? Adiyen don’t know how to identify my natural skills. Hoping that everyone in this world will be born with atleast one skill given by bhagavan. How shall adiyen determine what that natural skill of mine is? Also kindly highlight how natural skills differ from acquired skills.

Also can Intelligence be said as திறமை?

Adiyen is in a confused state. Kindly help me out.

Forgive any mistakes.

Adiyen

Swami with Alwaars, Asmath Acharyar and Velukkudi Swami’s thiruvadi balam, adiyen will try to answer this question based on Swami’s upanyasams. Like how our karma transfers from one janma to another Ruchi, Vasana and Sukshma Indriyaas also transfer from birth to birth. That’s why it’s very common to see born skillful people.

While it’s great to have good skills, a story from Mahabarat will help us understand this in a different perspective. We all know Lord Krishna, after His Education asked Sandipani Muni (His teacher) for what He should give as guru dakshina and His teacher asked Kannan to get back his son. Hearing this Lord Krishna sadly said to his friend, when a fruit seller and flower maker knew I’m the supreme Lord and asked for the highest prize (moksha) in return (also knowing I’m the only one who is capable of giving that), My knowledgeable guru who taught me all the 64 arts is asking for a small material benefit in return instead of the big prize.

So basically it doesn’t matter what skills we have. What really matters is as prapannas, whatever we have in this birth bought forward as prarapta karma, let’s use all of them in the service of the Lord and his devotees. This doesn’t mean we shouldn’t work on acquiring new skills to serve them better but we don’t have to worry for not getting them even after our sincere attempt.

Srimad Bhagavat Gita 9.27
yat karoṣhi yad aśhnāsi yaj juhoṣhi dadāsi yat
yat tapasyasi kaunteya tat kuruṣhva mad-arpaṇam

Please pardon this adiyen for any wrong saying?‍♂️

Adiyen agree with Badrinarayana Ramanuja Swamy. Swamy has beautifully explained! As adiyars, we don’t have to worry if we don’t possess certain skill naturally. We can always learn, but our superior/only goal should be doing kainkaryam (which is already devareer’s highest skill-Bhakti) of any forms to Perumal thAyAr, AzhwArs, acharyar and Bhagavatas. So as Badri Swamy said, we can learn anything with a view of that being a service/thondu to our Sampradayam.
Adiyen imparted from Velukkudi Sri Krishnan Swamy’s upanyasam that whatever we do, our centre motive must be towards doing Bhakti, kainkaryam and visvasam to Perumal and AchAryar.

And there is nothing to learn in this life other than knowing “Perumal” – Velukkudi Swamy’s answer to a Bhagavata who wondered “maybe Perumal is pressing adiyen in loukika things to learn more about this present world”.

Got some valuable insights from you both. Thank you both of you. Adiyen agree swami, that one need not go in search of skills that we do not possess but what for natural skills. How do I know what is my natural skill. Please say on how to identify? Ok let’s say during the required/appropriate time the natural skills will themselves become known to us. But sometimes natural skill can help us to take up a profession like Artist and can gain money which will help my athma ujjeevanam. Then adiyen need to know my natural skill before itself right so that one may think of taking up a profession?

Swamy, adiyen think that if there’s a natural skill, we can identify only when we explore more and more and we will get to know soon, usually as we try new things. Firstly, We will get a ruchi to try something, for example if devareer sings well and perform to the closest members for honest opinions, and when found that devareer is actually very good, then devareer can take that up to the next level on YouTube, etc. We never know unless we try. Now the question can be “where should I try or what should I try to see if I have an interest?” For this question, only devareer can find an answer. Other than what we already do (like working in an office or studying), identifying a skill that’s bound within us can exhibit anytime. Sometimes even someone else may notice and let us know that “you’re good at that”. natural skills doesn’t necessarily be helpful to make money (and of course it is not devareer’s only objective) but it may have several other gunas which may be incredibly helpful to others. A simple example: if we have the right videography, graphic designing skills, we can manage a YouTube channel on Sri Vaishnava sampradayam or such things. Only when we put ourselves to different events or scenarios, we will come to know. This process may take several years or within a few days. If we couldn’t find anything even after a long time, it doesn’t mean we don’t have any skills as this is a continuous process. In fact, devareer is a bhakta and That is the highest quality. So, best of luck to devareer in finding the self skills.
Adiyen has tried many things like digital drawing, graphic designing posters and stuff, managing a YouTube channel, etc. and found all the above very interesting as the quality of work was personally pleasing and other people noticed and congratulated. Similarly have tried singing but found that it’s not adiyen’s cup of tea to sing for a big platform without formal training. But I still enjoy singing (Carnatic Sangeetham, pasurams with tunes) alone or with the family. This can bring satisfaction up to some levels But athma ujjeevanam will be experienced whenever we think of Perumal’s, acharyar’s thirumeni/ when we sing their glories and always talk about their charitrams, leelamirthams.

An important reminder: we shouldn’t get lost in the search process as it may seem to be interesting many times but our superior goal should always surface our hearts- “that is attaining Perumal, acharyar’s thiruvadi ” with such a thought always in mind, Adiyen is sure that devareer can quickly spot out what’s unique to the self, in this search process.

Swamy, Please forgive adiyen for any wrong statements. Kuraigal irunthal kshamikka prarthikkiraen.

Srimate Ramanujaya namaha,
Namaskaaram .
Possible solutions for second part of the question regarding identifying natural skills..
1. When doing such work you should be able to enjoy it thoroughly without getting bored.
2. It should be done with minimal effort like for a fish in water, so that the work can be completed quickly and rest of the time can be used effectively for kainkaryam
3. You should feel satisfied when engaging in your natural skill.
In summary when you are engaged in a work involving natural skill you will feel satisfied happy and will be very efficient.
In previous days during Gurukula training acharya identfies the students nature and accordingly identifies a work engagement( hands on type of work/ financial trade type of business / administration or management type of work / intellectual study academics and research these are 4 broad types plus art related works like singing painting etc)
Hopefully by Perumal’s krpa you have encountered the possible avenues..if not by prayers to acharya and Perumaal that wanting to engage in the right work so as to utilize the time effectively for spiritual upliftment , you will eventually reach there.

Thanks enpanifan swami for the highlighting points of natural skills. Will try to match and find out with my Acharya and Velukkudi swami anugraham.

Again like the way you have answered the question on how to identify skills Ragesh swami. Thanks for the practical examples.

Jai Shri Krishna

Let me put a straightforward question

Will we ask our son or moksha?

on December 30, 2019

If Perumal comes in front of me adiyen will ask my son & not Perumal. This is my honest answer.

No use saying Sandhipani maharishi who is tightly bound to samsara.

Did Arjuna do Sharanagathi?
Did Dhruvan do Sharanagathi?
Dharmaputra asked for lord Narasimha
Adiyen think Vithura who asked

Hey dharmaputra lord Krishna is with you all the time and you are longing for 1 muhurtha kalam Narasimhan?

So unless we get the divine experience given by God himself we will still be attached to samsaram only

Summa sollikalam moksham venum nutu but ullla vAzhanum ngra ennam irukkum

Swamy Desikan Thiruvadigaley Sharanam
Srimathe Rangaramanuja Mahadesikaya Namaha
Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swamy Thiruvadigaley Sharanam
Srimathe Srinivasa Ramanuja Mahadesikaya Namaha
Srimathe Sri Varaha Mahadesikaya Namaha
.Sri:

Lord Hayagreeva is the answer. Pray Swamy Desikan. We get all talent. Swamy blessed with all skillsets.

Earned title Sarva Tanthra Swathanthrar

Adiyen was zero in maths. Prayed lord Hayagreeva and got class 2nd in discrete mathematics and also got a good tutor Sir Venkataraman who writes thesis for maths society of India.

Any skill as tribute to bhakthi is great

Any skill without bhakthi is waste

APN Swamy rejects Kalidasa saying ” Only Sringara rasam is there no bhakthi”

So our skills must be devotion oriented

Else it’s just a means to make money

Using money again buy flowers for archana
This turns out into bhakthi

Namma kaila dhan irukku

This is adiyen’s humble opinion
