Srimathe Ramanujaya Namah! Sr Sriranga Narayana Jeeyar Swamigale Saranam!

When Adiyen was in a bhagavatha gathering last week, a young girl asked, out of all the creatures why cow is so dear most to Krishna? I’m trying to get sastric references or Acharyars explanation to this question. Can anyone please help?

Adiyen,
Ramanuja Dasan.

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Dear Ramanuja Dasa,

Adiyen found a blog that shows shastric references about importance of cows.

http://www.blog.gomataseva.org/cow-hindu-vedas-puranas/.

From Gomatha, we get pancha gavyam.

BhagavAn The Supreme Sri Krishna has said in Bhagavadgita that “ I manifest in every living being and among cows, I’m the Kamadhenu”.

May be that’s why SriKrishna liked living in GoKul.

‘Go’ in sanskrit means cows.

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Moreover, animals in general are called as ‘Pasu’ in sanskrit Like humans have 3 gunas rajas, tamas, sathvik, animals are also classified into 3 gunas. Among the animals, cows are ‘Sathva gunas’ same as SrKrishna.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namah!

Sri Kongil Piratti,

At first, I’ve greatly enjoyed and thank you for your wonderful contributions to this group. Please continue with your wonderful contributions and your association.

I liked your answer but still I’m looking for some more strong explanation for my question.

Hope I’m not troubling to much.

Adiyen,
Ramanuja Dasan?

Namsakaram.

I have heard the following reasons in books and various speeches:

I am not quoting the exact sastric references..but only the essence, for exact verses What Kongil Pirati bhakta has given that link should serve well.

http://www.blog.gomataseva.org/cow-hindu-vedas-puranas/

गोमूत्रगोमयं सर्पि क्षीरं दधि च रोचना ।

षदंगमेतत् परमं मांगल्यं सर्वदा गवाम् ॥

Cow’s urine, dung, milk, ghee, curd and gorochana – these six are the most auspicious products.

Lord Krishna wants human society to follow varansrama dharma and elevate oneself spiritually.

Cows  form the basic and most indispensable contribution in all varna and asharams

First during Brahmacharaya when one needs to study scriptures, milk helps to make the brain tissues grow finely to understand and also to have good memeory

Then when one gets upanayanam Panchagavya purifies one.

Then in Grhista ashramam-  one needs to maintain oneself and the family with grains and also needs to perform sacrifices.

Cow dung and ox are essential for natural agriculture to provide required grains.

Cow ghee is the basic ingredient for fire sacrifice

Then for vanaprasta and sanyaasis milk forms the basic and simple diet which can provide complete nutirion.

Similarly for varanas, brahamanas need cow for their homam and yajna, vaisyas need cows for maintaining fields for their income and to maintain the society’s(which includes kshatriyas and Sudraas) basic needs .

So in summary without help of Cow, it is impossible to execute varanashrma dharma without which purpose of existence of earth would become void, so because of Cow’s immense service attitude Lord Krishna likes cow very much.

There is also another side point to note that after cow, next birth is usually human form. So Lord is happy and eager that the soul will be given better opportunity for self realization. So when a cow is killed prematurely it will have to take birth to complete its karma before being born as a human..this may be another reason why Lord Krishna dislikes violence to any being but more so towards  a cow..

Sri Ramanuja Munaye Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Dear BhagavAtas,

Please check the Jaya TV “Alwargal Aruamudhan” episodes from starting. Swami says about SriKrishna baalya kaala shestaigal, and Periya Alwar’s “Periya Thitumozhi” paasurams regarding Alwar as Thaay (mother) bhaavam to SriKrishna. Swami says about SriKrishna and cows. There is lot of information that Swami says  in these episodes.

Thank you everyone for the wonderful replies, blessed to have all your association?

Can you listen to the En Pani audio where the significance and preference of cows is explained.

Thank you Swami for the wonderful explanation in Enpani 924 on this topic. Due to my bad conditioning, I need the grace of Acharyar like you to remind and point me to whatever knowledge I already have (coz I had listened to this audio on the same day it was released). This reminds me of your Sarangathi Gadyam upanyasam, where you quoted from Periyavachan Pillai’s explanation on why Ramanucharyar asked to remove his Karma first and then mentions about Gyana, where as Alwars had asked it in reverse. Today we all have access to ample knowledge and all the technology to provide that but our past Karma blocks to take advantage of that. Only by grace and kindness of Perumaan, Alwars and Acharyars like yourself we can be delivered!

Adiyen!
