Guruvayooril indru Sri Jayanti

NamaskAram swami,

Adiyen has been wondering how come Guruvayur temple has charted August 18th (today) as Sri Jayanti.

Though the rituals and customs are different according to the scriptures that they follow, it happens to be an abhimAna sthalam.

As much as adiyen has noticed until now, Guruvayur has always followed the fall of ‘Rohini’ to determine the incidence of Sri Jayanti, coinciding with what we, Sri Vaishnavites, follow here.

However today is neither Ashtami nor Rohini to be considered for celebration.

If somebody happens to have any idea, please do share.

Vikram Swami,

I don’t think all Sri Vaishnavites celebrate it on Saturday (Aug 20).

Ahobilam and Vaikhanasa groups celebrate it today (Friday), while Munitrayam group celebrates it tomorrow. Tomorrow is seemingly more logical because of the presence of Rohini during late evening and until the next early morning.

However, PAncharAtra and some Thenkalai sampradAyikAs would be celebrating it on Aug 21 (Sunday).

Mine was actually a curiosity question to find the reason for celebrating it on a day when neither Ashtami nor Rohini exists.
