Swamy, Namaskaaram.
Giving up favourite fruit/vegetable in Kashi – is this practice, per Shastram? Is it followed to assist in Vairagyam development?

Srimathe Rangaramanuja Mahadesikaya Namaha

Sri Vaishnavites are supposed to be in vairAgyam at all places.

In Kashi yatra ritual during marriage father in law says
“Kashikku poga vendAm” “Don’t go to Kashi”
hence proved

Swamy,
Thanks. May be it is Gaya and not Kashi that people give up their favourite fruit / vegetable – I think this practice aids in developing vyragyam. Any additional views?

Giving up is not a big deal. I give up on multi storied office building . I give up on private jets. I give up what I like but not attainable. I give up on my dreams, what’s the point?

Point here is to “learn to live without & not get addicted”.

Here addiction usually refers to sensory addiction.

Some people who go to sabarimala generally give up on smoking and drinking for 48 days

The next day they come back from mountain they re-attach the bad qualities

The idea of fasting is to understand if we can be without for 48 days we can be without it for lifetime

Unfortunately common people don’t understand this

Thanks, again, Swamy, for those inputs. I was keen to know if this age – old practice has its roots in Shastram.
