Adiyen Daasan

As morning sandhyavandanam is to performed before sunrise, can this be done before taking bath? It is because both husband and wife are employed  and the male member has to take care of morning household as also to prepare and drop the children to school while the female member is busy in preparing breakfast and lunch for all..

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Namsakaram venarkkt swami,

In General, adiyen will share Velukkudi Swami’s past Upanyasams/Enpani with Acharya ThiruvAdi Bhalam that the focus of our life should be to understand What is the goal of this “Body (Shareeram) & JeevAthma (Ourselves)?” and how to make our everyday activities REVOLVE around “ParamAthma (BhagavAn SriKrishna)” in the CENTER of our life with Alwar’s/Acharya’s grace”.

Body is just a Tool given to us (JeevAthma) by BhagavAn Sriman NarayAnan for every jeevAthma to get rid of ones karma and do Kainkaryam to BhagavAn and reach Moksham in same birth.

[Adiyen pulled the below information from a Sri Vaishanava Blog, and adiyen honestly don’t know the translator name, so adiyen show gratitude to the translator who translated the information from Velukkudi Swami’s “NithyaAnushtanam” upanyasam]

Some Glossary to understand

Ashnutanam Avasya Karthavyam is what all our Poorvacharyas have been advocating and leading us by example.

Classification of Anushtanam

Classification based on rules to be followed by Men or Women.

Classification based on External (வெளி தோற்றம்) or Internal (அந்தரம்) anushtanams.

Three types of Cleanliness (Abhigamanam) for a JeevAthma

Whatever we do from waking up till cleaning ourselves is abhigamanam. Cleanse myself to proceed to the next step of cleaning other items to get ready for BhagavAn’s Aaradhana (poojai).

1. Shareera Suddhi (External) – Cleanliness of the body (Achuthaya Namaha).

2. Manasu Suddhi (Internal) – Cleanliness of mind (Ananthaya Namaha).

This will result in looking at happiness, sorrow the same without ahankaram, mamakaram. One needs to work towards improving the athma gunam which leads to manasu suthi.

3. Athma Suddhi (Internal) – Cleanliness of Athma (Govindaya Namaha)

Athma getting rid of karma, vasanai, ruchi is how an athma cleanses itself. Those are the dirt in athma which does not allow an athma to experience the true knowledge an athma possess.

Basic anushtanam

  1. Wake up during brahma muhurtham between 4 to 5 AM
  2. Say Hari namam 7 times
  3. Think of our poorvacharya paramparai by mentally saying “Lakshmi natha samarambham..”
  4. Think of perumal’s 5 roopam – Para, Vyuh, Vibhava, Archai, Antaryami by saying “Min meethu ..” pasuram. One can also recite parathvadhi panchangam by Nadathur ammal ( vathsya Varadachari) which has 5 verses of these roopam.
  5. Look at Perumal photo as you wake up. Even when going to bed think of Perumal and see his photos.
  6. Sleep on the floor or raised bed with thick blanket if floor is cold as in colder places. Try to avoid sleeping on cushion bed or pillows.
  7. Then as you wake up attend to nature’s call, brush/clean your mouth.
  8. 8. Go for a bath. Do not do anything or drink anything without taking bath
  9. Always take bath by wearing some clothes and always take head bath. Use water from river, well. If not, use tap water but do not have a shower, since water needs to first touch our feet going upwards to head like river bathing. Shower does the opposite effect since water flows from head to feet, which is not good for health. In river bathing, this concern is not there, since water touches from feet to head in sequential order. Collect the tap water in a bucket and do manasa aradanam. Do manasa aradhanam for the bathing water thinking it is from the great rivers of ganga, yamuna, cauvery, Airamatha Pushkarani (which adiyen think about since it is beyond Virajai nadhi)
  10. Apply Thiruman kappu based on the rules prescribed for men , women
  11. As you apply thiruman, start reciting Nithyaanusandanam which includes – Vakya Guru parampara, Sloka guru parampara, Aacharya thaniyan. Also start reciting Thirumanthiram, dwayam, charma slokam. Thirumanthiram need to be recited in the morning and one can say 108 times. Dwayam need to be meditated all through the day both the slogam and the meaning of dwayam. One needs to keep thinking and meditating on Guru paramparai and Dwayam all through the day.
  12. Starting with Daya patram.. recite all the slogams
  13. Recite Nithyaanusandhanam – minimum Thirupallandu, Thirupalliyezhuchu, Thirupavai. if time permits Ramanuja nootrandhadhi, Gadya thrayam, Stotra ratnam, chatusloki, jeethanthe stotram for men. Recite aachayra thaniyan.
  14. Do SandhyavAndhanam , madhyanikam as per the rules on time. Ensure that gayatri japam is done during surya udayam.
  15. While cooking women can continue to recite Nithya anusanthanam.

So, SandhyaVandhanam (in the morning) is 15th step after the 8th step, since it involves holy mantras chanting which requires “Shareera Suddhi” to be completed first to proceed on the entire ‘Abhigamanam’ cleansing process”.

There could be exceptions of bathing when one is sick, and in those situations BhagavAn SriKrishna is very accommodative due to HIS Karunai, but the standard rule is as above in normal times.

FYI, There are more than 16 steps for daily activities by men and women service to BhagavAn at Home. Adiyen just stopped referring further due to the question limited to Sandhya Vandhanam.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Namaskaram Ragesh Swami and all Devotees,

In general with Acharya ThiruvAdi Bhalam, here is what Adiyen has heard from Sri Velukkudi Swami’s upanyasams.

“Veda mantra chanting” and “doing Sandhya Vandhanam” is to be done by:
1) MALES Only, plus
2) Those males should have undergone UPANAYANAM, plus
3) they need to be in 1st three varnas.

For other varnas, it is not necessary to chant Veda mantra or do Sandhya Vandhanam.

This is a rule set by Supreme BhagavAn Sri Krishna.

However, anyone from any varnas can do Samasrayanam / Pancha Samskaram / Prapatthi to get Ramanuja Sambhandham for Moksham and Kainkaryam in SAME BIRTH  per “Gadhya Trayam and Prapannamrutham granthams”. Under such circumstances, Acharyan Swami will give Upadesam on “Thiru Mantram, Dvaya Mantram & Charama Slokams” to those Sharnagathas irrespective of their Varna/Kulam.

So after Samasrayanam, every thing that we do based on our “Yatha Shakthi” is blessed by Acharyan and each Sharanagathas will follow their our “Nithya Karma’s & Naimithyika Karma’s” based on their own Kulam/Varnam as a KAINKARYAM to BhagavAn Sriman NarayanAn for Happiness and we DON’T do these as a “Means (UPAYAM)” for Moksham.

So, It is not necessary for one Varna to follow or do other Varna activities, since BhagavAn SriKrishna doesn’t expect it from us, rather BhagavAn is giving Moksham to ALL (men or women of any varnas/Kulam) who says “SRIMATHE RAMANUJAYA NAMAHA or UYYA ORAEY VAZHI UDAYAVAR THIRUVADI”.

Danyosmi Swami. Adiyen understand that it is not really necessary for people to follow other Varnas’ activities. Adiyen belong to the first three Varnas and a male but haven’t undergone upanayanam. Is Upanayanam done to males belonging to the three Varnas or only brahmanas. Please enlighten adiyen in this.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Namaskaram Ragesh Swami,

Regarding devareer’s query “Is Upanayanam done to males belonging to the three Varnas or only brahmanas”,

Pulling information from some blogs with Acharya ThiruvAdi Bhalam.

In the first three communities as per Sanatana Dharmam, namely Brahmins, Kshatriyas, and Vysyas,

  1. Upanayana marks the beginning of Brahmacharya Ashrama which is Set apart for the study of Vedas; This stage is said to be the second birth for him. Mere wearing of a sacred thread initiated on the Upanayana day DOES NOT make him a real Brahmacharin.
  2. It is rather the STUDY OF VEDAS, LEARNING and CHANTING Vedic mantras including Gayathri and Sandhyavandhana which will qualify him to be a true Brahmacharin after Upanayana.

In modern education, there is no place for Sanatana Dharma Scriptures which Swami has mentioned in couple of Enpani’s and very few study Vedas after Upanayana. The least that is expected to be done after this ceremony is to recite the Gayathri mantra and do Sandhyavandhana, since the next step as in above point 2) is not even being considered by many. The ceremony is not given much importance or practiced with religious fervor by these communities in the past. No attempt is made by the parents or the religious preceptors to educate the youngsters on the importance of this ceremony and its spiritual values in the past. The ceremonies are done in a routine manner and the wards take this sacred religious ritual with least seriousness. The net result is complete ignorance and degeneration of values. So, many are not aware of the importance of these ceremonies and values. It is hard to say who fault it is? (either Kali’s issue or due to our karma’s/ignorance?), but alteast, the males in 1st three communities starting to recover with BhagavAn’s grace is visibly seen in present days, with the help of GyanaAcharya’s like Sri Velukkudi Swami and other Vaidhehas, due to their Tremendous Effort to propagate the importance of Sanatana Dharmam to youngsters/adults and these ceremonies are flourishing now. Like, Sri Velukkudi Swami (KKT) has own Veda PadaShala to Study Veda, Learn Veda & Chant Veda etc…..

Overall, studying/learning/chanting vedas, makes “Loksha kShemam and Sarve Janaha Sukhino Bhavanthu” to keep the world in Peaceful state.

Adiyen Srinivasa (DhoddayaAcharyar) Dasan.
