Doubts in puranjana Charitram- Bhagaavatam

Srimate Raamunajaye Namaha,

Swamy has been explaining the interesting story of Puranjanan and how it reflects state of soul in Samsara.

Those who have been hearing the recent series of Bhagavatham, kindly help to clarify the following aspects which I could not understand.

  1. In the list of type of living beings it was indicated as 1 legged, 2 legged ( humans) and 3 legged ..etc.. Swami briefly mentioned about 3 legged  which I could not understand.
  2. In the explanation of what represents what etc, what does the 110 boys and 111 girls born represent?
  3. Also Swami explained that it is not that we were once in Vaikunta and then came to samsara, but rather we have been here eternally. yet to understand this fully ( but perhaps not easy for now)

These are covered in last 4 to 5 audios.

Namaskaram Enpani fan Swami,

Glories to our Sri Velukkudi Swamigal!

adiyen have been also listening to the 4.29 audios, a treasure to be preserved for life. adiyen will try to answer some of the questions devareer raised.

  1. 3 Legged: Sometimes we (humans) are also referred to as 3 legged as we use a walking stick in our old age (Thirumangai Azhwar regularly refers to this in Periya Thriumozhi). Apart from that in SB 10.63.22, Śiva-jvara who tired to attack Lord Krishna during the Bāṇāsura battle is referred to have 3 legs. Ipnopidae is tripod fish found in deep seas.
  2. In 4.27.6&7 Naradamuni says  King Purañjana spend half of his life begetting 1100 Sons (śatāny ekādaśa) and 110 daughters (duhitṝr daśottara-śataṁ). There is a general understanding that many like to get more sons than daughters and since King Purañjana got more sons than daughters he was happy. The point here is that the King was having a heart full of lust and sinful reactions (kāma-kaśmala-cetasaḥ) and not using kāma in the service of the Lord but for self enjoyment
  3. All Jeevatamas and our Karma are anāthi (beginning less) but while Jeevatmas don’t have an antham, Karmas do have an end. Combined this with the upanishad verse “Sabdasha sakhalu Evam Varthayan Yavada yusham brahma lokam abhi sampadyathe nacha punara vartha nacha  punara vartha the Ethyadika” (The meaning of upanishadic passage is that a meditator or prapanna remaining in this world till his death will attain the brahma loka (Vaikuntha) and will not come back and will not come back). The repetition of word will not come back twice indicates the conclusion of Brahma vidya or Upanishad itself. This is confirmed by the pala shruthis in more than 75 thirumozhis (a group of 10 or more poems) sung by our Azhwars and by our Geethacharyan as well. Referring to the above, the statement that there is no possibility that we would once been in Vaikuntam and because of Karma we were pushed into Samsara.

Hope this helps.

adiyen,
Ramanuja dasan!

Please read the Chandogya Upanishad Verse as follows:

tadhaitadbrahmā prajāpatayai uvāca prajāpatirmanave manuḥ prajābhyaḥ ācāryakulādvedamadhītya yathāvidhānaṃ guroḥ karmātiśeṣeṇābhisamāvṛtya kuṭumbe śucau deśe svādhyāyamadhīyāno dharmikānvidadhadātmani sarvaindriyāṇi sampratiṣṭhāpyāhiṃsansarva bhūtānyanyatra tīrthebhyaḥ sa khalvevaṃ vartayanyāvadāyuṣaṃ brahmalokamabhisampadyate na ca punarāvartate na ca punarāvartate || 8.15.1 ||
