Namaskaram! Does Vedas comment on dhrustis. Globally we use only lemon, pumpkin or coconuts for dhristi based on the events or sometime elders uses pepper or salt or some ashes. For new born babies we apply kajal in chin or cheek. Can you please explain on the effect and consequences and credibility of the related procedures we follow. Thank you!

Sri Ramanuja Munaye Namaha,
Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Meantime Swami says, with Swami’s anugraham, adiyen will share few things.

In sanskrit,
* “Adhristi” means ‘evil eye’ (negative energy, ketta paarvai, theeya shakti) of others.
* “Dhristi” means normal viewing or wisdom of others.

So to remove evil eye ‘Adhristi’ of others on us, we need a normal viewing/wisdom.

Also in sanskrit, another meaning for “Dhristi” is ‘pupil of eye’. The pupil of eye is round and black color.

So, it is a belief that, a normal viewing ‘Dhristi’ needs to fall on us to redirect the negative energy of “Adhristi” evil eye person.

So ‘Dhristi’ pottu which is circular as pupil of eye is put on cheeks or forehead of babies, so that only good people’s eyes ‘Dhristi’ need to fall on that baby.

Also the color of pupil of eye ‘dhristi’ is black in color which represents Supreme BhagavAn SriKrishna’s color. Swami has said in past enpani about SriKrishna is Black (Karuppu) but Azhagu (beautiful).

So we can sing the song about SriKrishna as
கருப்பு தான் எனக்கு பிடிச்ச கலரு…………

In hindi ‘kaala’ (காலா) means black/karuppu, and SriKrishna was black and brought up in yadhava kula ‘Settu (சேட்டு) business’ family eating ). So HE put on lot of ‘weight (வெயிட்டு) like a round baby by eating 24/7 butter. So we can sing,
செம்ம வெயிட்டு நம்ம காலா சேட்டு, நம்ம காலா சேட்டு……..
*************

Overall adiyens understanding is, black color (SriKrishna) dhristi pottu is applied to remove Adhrishti (evil eye) of others.

This is an age old Sanatana Dharma ritual followed by most.

Swamy,
Dhanyosmi for elaborate answer
“yadhava kula ‘Settu (சேட்டு) business’ family eating ).” – It’s wrong yAdhavA is idayar.
Brahma Sri Damodara Dhikshitar Swamy said they are born between “KshatriyAs & VaishyAs” so in Tamil they are called இடையர். இரண்டிற்கும் இடையில் பிறந்ததனால் இடையர்!

Sri Ramanuja Munaye Namaha,
Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Dhanyosmi BhagavAta for the idayar explanation.
Thats why, Adiyen in the above thread didnot mention Yadgava kulam is vaishyas or shatriyas. Adiyen used the ‘business’ inorder to inform that yadhava kulam sold butter, curd to Madhura nagaram. It doesnt mean, the word ‘business’ is applied for vaishayas only unless strict varna ashrama dharmam is followed.

All Varnas do business nowadays except few. That doesnt mean, all business doing oerdons are vaishyas.

But bhagavatas point is correct based on varna ashrama Dharmam.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Dear Bhagavata,

Overall, adiyen wanted to mention about “black color” significance as SriKrishna being black and beautiful based on Swami’s Pravachanams. So, black is karuppu in tamil and kaala in hindi. Hebce, just for simplicity explanation/ synchronization, adiyen picked kaala settu, but adiyens intention is not to talk about varna ashramam. So the primary focus to be on black color SriKrishna “Kaala Settu”.

Overall, adiyen shared adiyens understandig as black color round (SriKrishna) dhristi pottu is applied on babies cheeks or fotehead to remove Adhrishti (evil eye) of others falling on these babies.

Swami says beautifully in enpani #1103, why somethings in our home are considered as auspicious. It is because SriKrishna has decided ONLY those items to be “Mangalam and Pavithram”  and HE himself is that auspicious item. Swami lists such items that are considered as mangalam and pavithram. Like small bangle made of elepahant romam and put on babies hands is considered for dhristi etc..and all other items which is not listed, not to be considered as ‘mangalam and pavithram’.

Sri Ramanuja Munaye Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruve Namaha,

Madhippukuriya Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Thiruvadigalaey Sharanam,

Adiyen Swami,

Devareer beautiful explanation about which items are “Mangalam & Pavithram”. Others items that StiKrishna has not listed should not be consdiered as Managalam and Pavithram.

Like Devareer said, Bangles from elephnat romam put on babies hands is considered for dhristi, and other ways is not considered as mangalam/pavithram

Lighting lamp with Oil and Thiri is Mangalam/Pavithram and Putting Electric lamb is not Managlam//Pavithram

With Devareer anugraham, adiyen would like to mention same way, Ladies traditionally have habit of putting Kann Mai (கண் மை , eyebrow liner). Adiyen is not talking about the modern girls/ladies putting eyebrows for style. Those are cosmetic things made of chemicals like the electirc lamp example (not auspicious), not like the natural oil lamp way (natural kann mai).

There are traditional ways for making a NATURALl Kann mai, and there are many Pros to it. These were followed by Traditional Sanatana Dharma ladies and old womens still in villages and by some in cities as well.

Like, Natural Kann Mai keeps away from “Billie Shoonyam, Protects eyes from dsut, others trying to do vaseegaranam , removes others evil eye (Adhristi) and helps on Dhristi etc….”

If traditional family ancestors were following a traditional way, then that should be prescribed in shastras as well, since there is shastric procedure to make a Kann mai (eyebrow liner) with natural ingredients.

So, when traditional ladies apply these Kann mai for them regularly which also helps on Dhristi, they apply the remaining natural kann mai paste on their babies cheeks instead of washing it away, so the babies are also protected ‘Dhristi’.

Adiyen believe, that’s how babies having “Dhristi Pottu” Term evolved (Natural Black Color Kann Mai), which is True Mangalam/Pavithram, as the original kann mai paste is prepared using natural ingredients in a Shastric way which is also applied for the babies. Other ways of Kann mai preparation and ladies applying it, is like electric lamp example (not Mangalam/Pavithram).

For SriVaishnavas Ladies/Gents like us, the SriChoornama/Thirumna Kaapu/Acharya Samasryanam is the final protection for Athma/Body, but general Santana Dharmis, when they follow traditional sampradhayic ways, then SriKrishna protects them is what adiyen understood from Devareer’s pravachanams. Also SriVaishnava ladies apply these traditional Kann Mai, as there are many unkown natural benefits even for the body like “Seyyadhana Seyyom”.

Srivaishnavaites like, Arayars (Arayar sevai) use natural kann mai during their divya prabhandam dance expressions. Also, many who do classical dance use it.
