Classification of Puranaas and Vedas

Srimatae Ramanujaya Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,,

Swami generally the 18 Puranaas are classified as 6 for Satva Guna, 6 for Rajas and 6 for Tamo Guna..is there a sastric evidence for this classification.. if so please do share it to us.

if there is no formal evidence, do all sects of Sanatana dharma accept this classification?

Similarly in Vedas how is the classification done as sections meant for Satva Guna stage of souls..for Tamas and for Rajo guna?

I assume the vedas and puranaas by themselves are beyond Satvam, Rajas and Tamas.. but certain sections are suitable for certain stage of evolution of soul’s intelligence depending on where it is trapped. This is my understanding.

Please correct and clarify.

Nandri

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Here is an article which states about the verses/quotes about classification of puranas into Satva,Rajas,Tamas.

https://narayanastra.blogspot.com/2013/05/vishnu-supreme-brahman-according-to-all.html#h.jpsmv0y5s5sd

Swami Ramanujar “Vedhartha Samgraham” states:

agneḥ śivasya māhātmyaṃ tāmaseṣu prakīrtyate /

rājaseṣu ca māhātmyam adhikaṃ brahmaṇo viduḥ //

sāttvikeṣu ca kalpeṣu māhātmyam adhikaṃ hareḥ /

teṣv eva yogasaṃsiddhā gamiṣyanti parāṃ gatim //

The same is found in Matsya Purana as:

sāttvikeṣu purāṇeṣu māhātmyamadhikaṃ hareḥ /

rājaseṣu ca māhātmyam adhikaṃ brahmaṇo viduḥ // MatsP_53.68 //

tadvadagneśca māhātmyaṃ tāmaseṣu śivasya ca /

Also, In Vishnu Puranam Upanyasam as below link, Swami says in the beginning that, depending up on Brahma’s which of the 3 guna’s are predominant at that time, He chants either Sathvik Purana or Rajasik Purana or Tamasik Purana. If Swami is saying about 3 types of classification of Puranas, then that itself is the  shastric formal evidence, so we dont need to worry about actual shastric references.

Bhaktas another question, “do all sects of sanatana dharmis accept this classification”. The Answer is already there in above Swamis clippings, same as  Brahmas situation. It will depend up on the individual persons which guna is predominant, depending up on that, they will read related puranas. So accepting this 3 classification in right sense  happens only if the persons Satva Guna is predominant, like how Bhakta is accepting this classification.

Also adiyens understanding with Swami/Senior Bhagavatas anugraham is, Finally knowing which Puranas are which category, and what does these puranas/BhagavAt Gita says, doesn’t give us Moksham. Reading granthams or listening upanyasams only does “Chitta Shuddhi” (cleanising our karmas), so we could have a CLEAR MIND, which leads us to PERFORM “Sharanagathy (Athma Samarpanam)” on Para-Devathai ‘Perumal-Thayar’ ThiruvAdi through Swami Ramanujar ThiruvAdi, which gives us Moksham in same birth for those who has desire to reach SriKrishna lokam in SriVaikuntam. If not, we will keep reading all puranas/Gita in next janma also, like how were doing it in the past janma without doing Sharanagathy on Acharyan lotus feet. We have to stop our birth-death cycle at some point by doing Sharanagathy on Acharyans lotus feet, so Thayar-Perumal could their property ‘JeevAthma’ back, is what adiyen understood.

Srimathe Ramanujaya Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Nandri Bhakta for understanding.

Swami has mentioned that vedas were all together in 1st two yugas Sathya/Kritha yuga and in Treta yuga. Later BhagavAn makes Veda Vyasa appear towards end of the 3rd Dwapara yuga to divide the vedas to Rig, Yajur, Saama, Adharvana vedas to make it easier for people in the 4th Kali yuga, since we do not have much lifespan, Gnaana, Vairaagya etc…So Acharya ThiruvAdi gives us the Anokoola Gyanam.

Bhakta,

Accept the explanation of Vedas. But it does not clarify if certain sections of vedas are meant to elevate certain category of people (tamas rajas and sattva)

But in today’s enapani 978 are vedas practical (5th april 2018) Swami explains that puraanaas are from vedas. So if puraanaaas are classified as 3 types then vedas should have these three sections as well?

To clarify, i do accept that all vedas and puraanaas are beyond rajas, tamas and sattvam..but certain sections are more relevant to a particular stage of a soul s evolution?

‘So if puraanaaas are classified as 3 types then vedas should have these three sections as well?” – very relevant question.

Velukkudi Swamy in one of EnPaNi has said Vedas prescribe rituals to go to Swargam . It does not encourage jiva himsa but if one insists on doing a wrong thing then Veda creates more difficult steps to achieve it such that the human will abstain from doing it.

So jivas like rakshas too get varAm with their Rajo and Tamo intentions. BhasmAsurA etc. Should one waste a lifetime to kill another? So naive and foolish.

To get Parama Padam sattva gunam helps a great extent. Finally Sarva dharmAn parithyajya that includes sacrifice of sattva gunam for lower objectives like Swargam to get to his lotus feets.
