Casting lots (kulukku cheetu)

Namaskarams!

In our family when we have to make some crucial decision and we are not sure what to do, we cast lots (kulukku cheetu) in front of the Lord in our pooja room. Whichever chit is picked we consider it the Lord’s decision and follow it.

Is this practice acceptable to our Acharyas and shastram? Is it a valid practise or a muda nambikai?

Please forgive me if I have committed any offense while asking this question. I asked it only to ascertain whether what we are doing is accepted by sastras.

Sri Ramanuja Munaye Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruve Namaha,

Dear BhagavAta,

Adiyens’ understanding from Swami’s Upanyasams, Any activity, if we involve “GuruParamparai”, then that activity result will be what is “Hitham” for us, means GuruParamparai will decide if that activity is neccessary for us or not.

So, make sure, BhagavatA does GuruParamparai chanting before Casting the Lots (Kulukku Cheettu), if the lots are meant to decide a Positive/Constructive growth for the family.

There is a similar “Casting the Lots” seen in GuruParamaparai during Swami Ramanujar Avatram.

Onetime ThirupAthi Venkateswara Perumal was pleased with HIS Devotee “Thondaimaan Chakkravarthy (King of that area), and gave HIS Sanghu & Chakkaram to Him.

So, when the Archaka Bhattar Swami opened the Sanctum in the morning, He was shocked to see Perumal without HIS Aadhaar Card (Shanghu & Chakkaram), and many Devotees started calling or doubhted the Diety as Murughan devatha or Shiva etc….and still this controversy exisit in present day.

This issue reached Swami Ramanujar’s ears while Swami in SriRangam. At that time, Swami walked from SriRangam to Thirumala to solve this issue and debated with Shastras & Sthala Puranas to prove this deity is Sriman NarayanAn, but no one believed. SO Swami Ramanuajr finally made one idea “Appodhu Oru Sindhai Seidhu”. Swami told other devotes to bring the weapons of those Devatas like Vel, Shoolam etc….along with Sanghu, Chakkaram and put everthing inside the Sanctum and CLOSED the Sanctum, and chanted HIS Acharyas Thaniyan and GuruParamaparai, and requsted Perumal to do teh Hitham and Pick HIS favorite weapon and prove HE is Sriman NarayanA.

This is same as Casting the Lots (different weapons), and finally when Swami Ramanujar opened the Sanctum, Perumal was holding Shanghu and Chakkram and left the other devataas weapons on the ground.

So, make sure, BhagavatA does GuruParamparai chanting before Casting the Lots (Kulukku Cheettu), if the lots are meant to decide a Positive/Constructive growth for the family, and ask Perumal to do what is “Hitham” for us.

Adiyen Sri Velukkudi Krishna Dasan,

Uyya Oraey Vazhi UdayavAR ThiruvAdi,

அப்பனுக்கு ஷங்க்கு ஆழி அளித்த பெருமான் Swami Ramanujar KI Jai,

(Swami Ramanujar is the one who gave Shangu and Chakkram to our Appan Perumal)

Savam Sri Krishnarpanam Asthu
