Anger and Karma

Hare Krishna! Aneha koti namaskaram!

In general, lord sri krishna says, anger is a ‘asura’ guna that creates binding to this world. But in 18.47, lord says, the actions do not attract any sin if done according to one’s nature.

Question: If we raise voice or show annoyance at someone (especially when the intention is good), does it attract ‘karma’ ?

Bg 18.47 It is better to engage in one’s own occupation, even though one may perform it imperfectly, than to accept another’s occupation and perform it perfectly. Duties prescribed according to one’s nature are never affected by sinful reactions.

Swami, Kotana Koti Namaskarams of Adiyen Srinivasan Pranesh

Anger in any sense is not recommended.

This Gita verse should be understood as Swadharma vs Paradharma. In conflicting situations, Swadharma is better than following Paradharma.

Swadharma is what Sastras prescribe as Dharma of an individual based on Varnashrama.

Arjuna was a Kshatriya. His duty is to mercilessly kill his enemies to save Dharma. This falls under Swadharma of a Kshatriya.

But, he started showing mercy on everyone and fell into unwanted pity despite others stood on side of Adharma.

What happens if he leaves his enemies out of mercy? Adharma will flourish in world.

Unwanted mercy is also dangerous to society.

If the duty of army man in border is to kill terrorist at border, he shall mercilessly kill him. Otherwise, the terrorist will kill thousands of innocent people. Isn’t it?

In the situation of Arjuna, fighting with enemies was his Swadharma. Showing unwanted mercy on them is Paradharma.

Showing mercy on adharmis is not Dharma of Kshatriya. Showing mercy on all uniformly is Dharma of others like Brahmanas, Rishis etc.

So, Krishna says, in conflicting situations, it is always better to follow one’s own Swadharma instead of following Paradharma, though Swadharma looks like a sinful act. Though it may outwardly look like sinful act, it won’t affect by following if it’s one’s Swadharma as per Saastras.

There is no doubt that anger in both Dharma is prohibited and the fruits of all Karma to be offered to Lord Himself.

Thavariruppin Mannikkavum.

Hare Krishna! Aneha koti namaskaram swami!

Dhanyosmi swami for the detailed answer, got to learn swadharma & paradharma through swami’s response.

However, Adiyen’s question is slightly intricate. In Adiyen’s opinion, varnasrama relevance is hugely lost in today’s world and hence, what defines as duty (from one’s nature) itself has become a subject of debate. Probably the demarcation was very clear before start of kali yug so the teachings of Bhagavad Gita, could have been followed with no ambiguity.

We can stop the discussion, if this question/topic touches upon any sensitive aspects. Kshamikkanam.

Kotanakoti Namaskarams Swami

Here is what understood by Adiyen’s Sittrarivu. Please forgive mistakes.

Anger by any means is wrong. But, voice may be raised with good intentions, if required in a situation when we try to do good to others.

But, we ourselves shall be first sure that what we think as good is good only to others, before correcting others.

There is a huge difference between responding to a situation and reacting to a situation.

Responding comes from buddhi. Reacting is based on pure emotions. Responding is acceptable whereas reacting leads to karma for sure. Anger is one which arises out of emotions, may it be for good or bad cause.

Let us take two examples.

1. A child goes near hot fire without knowing it will burn. A mother advises him twice or thrice but he does same thing. So, a mother raised her voice to scare the child and the child stays away.

Here it is clear that the intention is good. Raising voice is acceptable. But, anger to be prohibited. It should be a poi kopam but not from heart.

2. A school going child is interested to see Ramayanam and Mahabharatam videos with interest on Rama and Krishna. If a mother advises to concentrate on both studies and Epics, it is good.

Let us assume a mother says, “I am saying for your good and bright future. Don’t go into Spiritualism now. Focus completely on studies. These Epics may be learnt once you earn and settle in life.”

In second example also, a mother assumes that she is doing good to child and raised her voice. But, she is really not doing good to child. Am I right?

So, the answer for your question changes with situation.

First, we shall ensure that we are raising our voice for good cause only. All our assumptions may not be right.

Even if we find that raising voice can help, doing it with anger is dangerous to ourselves as well as to others to whom we advise.

Adiyen have a major question ” Swadharma” comes by birth or practice?

For anger adiyen have exception “Durvasa” maharishi. Similarly for Kshatriya becoming a brahmin adiyen quote exception ” Rishi Vishwamithra” maha muni.

So here comes the question,
Arjuna was asked by Krishna not to change the path (even though he was qualified to be nyana yogi) because he is used to be warrior or he was born as warrior?

Kotana Koti Namaskarams Swami

Yes. I do agree that Varnashrama comes by nature and not birth. Few of our Rishis are not born in Brahmin family.

Kousika Rishi was a Kshatriya at the beginning.

But, Arjuna decided himself to fight against Kauravas. At battle field, with bow and arrow in hand, he suddenly started pitying for others, which is not his lakshana. He took a vow to save Dharma being a Kshatriya and has to abide by that.

If he wants to avoid fight, he should have done from very beginning. It is not right to get back after entering into battle field.

Regarding anger, it should be prohibited to whichever Varna a man has chosen. Even in case of Durvasar or Viswamitrar, they felt ashamed themselves for getting angry later. There is no exception.

Hare Krishna!

Aneha koti namaskaram swamis! Few more points gathered over y’day on the topic. Please correct if there is any misunderstanding.

Even a Kshatriya has to approach any conflict with the 4 techniques (in this order) – sama, dhana, danda & beda. Lord Sri Krishna is also believed to follow these before going on war with Gauravas.

So to the question, reacting or expressing anger may fall under ‘danda’ and before trying ‘sama’ / ‘dhana’ is probably wrong. If done after the first 2 techniques, may not attract any karma is what Adiyen’s humble opinion.

Namaskaram Krishna Dasan Swami,

Adiyen beleive order is sAma dhAna bedha Dhanda.

War is last option.

Velukkudi Krishnan Swami in Vithura neethi has explained.

Krishna went as messenger and did not dive into war. Bedha is a technique to divide the enemies.

Like enemy’s enemy is my friend. This will make our enemy think twice to start a war with us.
Meaning the war can be avoided at any cost. It should be within dharma.

Getting anger is just like Srinivasa Pranesh Swamy told. It’s like we make up our anger. We should not be controlled by anger.

We should not get into anger. Just like stunt people fight in movies.

Velukkudi Krishnan Swami has told by getting anger first we undergo the pain before showing it on others.

Dasanudasan,

Devar said “Anger caused by emotions originating from heart based reactions and such emotions lead to sins”.

The exception adiyen quoted was “Whenever dhurvasar gets angry his tapO balam increases” and his “anger” like NAradhar Kalaham, always ended in nanmai that is good.

Usually peeiyavas say when Acharya get angry that also results only in good ending. So associating with rishi or Acharya always ends with good results whatever the condition may be.
