Adiyen’s queries on 9 stages of Bakthi as per Bagavata Puranam

Shri Velukkudi Swamigalin Porpadhangalukku Adiyenin Aneka Koti Namaskaarangal.

As per Bagavata Purana, Adiyen understand that Prahalatha gives nine stages of Bakthi, out of which Surrender or Atma Nivedhanam is considered last stage. Adiyen have 4 questions based on below nine stages of Bakthi.

1. Sravanam – Repeated hearing of Lord’s glory from scriptures.

2. Keerthanam – Singing His glory.

3. Smaranam – Remaining always in His thought.

4. Paada Sevanam – Remaining in Service of Lord.

5. Archana – Doing His poojas.

6. Vandanam – Salutations and Sashtanga Namaskarams.

7. Dasyam – Serve Him with the attitude of Lord as Master and self as Slave.

8. Sakhyam – Friendship with Lord.

9. Atma Nivedhanam or Self Surrender.

Adiyen’s questions based on above are as follows:

1. Is success in all these nine stages required for Moksha or any of these stages can independently liberate a devotee?

2. Only Sakhyam is mentioned in nine stages. Adiyen consider Lord and Lordesses as father and mother and Adiyen as their son. This gives bliss to Adiyen. Do Adiyen need to change this attitude and focus on friendship? While we have master and slave attitude, how is friendship possible?

3. If success in all 9 are required, do they go by above sequence? For example, Adiyen do Pooja for some time in a day, try to remain in His thought always, do Keerthanams some times, Namaskarams on same day Adiyen go to temple etc. Adiyen understand that the first eight stages need not be in the sequence and can be practised parallely in same day. Please clarify.

4. Is Atma Nivedhanam or Surrender, something to be practised by a devotee or it naturally occurs as end result of former eight stages of Bakthi?

Adiyen request Swamy to provide a clarity on these nine and guide Adiyen into practise of these. Adiyen have already wasted many births in unwanted things. Without further wasting births, Adiyen wish to get into practical following of scriptures with the blessings of Devarir.

Sarvam Shri Krishnaarpanamastu!

Srimatae Ramanujaya Namaha,

Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami Guruvae Namaha,

Dear Bhakta,

For the Initial Question, based on Sri Velukkudi Krishnan Swami’s past Upanyasams.

****************************************************************

Each steps in Nava Vitha Bhakthi (9 types of Bhakthi) to be followed which leads to Total Surrender 9 step “Athma Nivedhanam or Athma Samarpanam or Nyasam or Prapatti”.

After Prapatti, the previous 8 steps are followed depending up on each Atma’s Capability (Yatha Shakthi) as a “Kainkaryam (Sathvika Time-pass)” till we leave to Mokshma ‘SriVaikuntam’ in this birth with Perumal’s ThiruvAdi Krupai received via Acharyan ThiruvAdi.

**********************************************************************

Any Bhakta can consider any type of 9 Relationships with THE SUPREME Sriman NAraynanAn as below. When SriRama decided to go for exile without Sri Lakshmana, then Sri Lakshmana said to SriRama, that He will be SHESHAN (Servant) to HIM (SriRama the SUPREME) only, since any JeevAThams has all these relationships with the Param Porul Sriman NArayanana ONLY and not with anyone else.

  1. Maatha Sriman Narayanaha (as adiyens Mother)
  2. Pitha Sriman Narayanana (as adiyens Father)
  3. Braatha Sriman Narayanaha (as adiyens Brother)
  4. Bhartha Sriman Naraynanaha (as adiyens Husband)
  5. Sukruthu Sriman Narayanaha (as adiyens Friend)
  6. Bandhu Sriman Narayanaha (as adiyens Any relationship)
  7. Gadhihi Sriman Narayanaha (as adiyens final Resort/Thanjam)
  8. Sarvam Sriman Narayanaha ( as adiyens All-in-All, yellam yenakku Narayananae)
  9. Sharanam Sriman Narayanaha ( as adiyens Master, surrender to Devareer LOTUS FEET)

********************************

1) Examples to show this relationship with God and Why he protects us and what should we do ?

Huge Whale gave birth to a baby whale. The big whale stays at the bottom of the sea and the baby wanted to go to the top and play. While the baby is playing, a sea turtle comes to eat the baby whale. The big whale looking at the situation tries to come up to rescue the baby and on seeing the big whale the turtle just goes away. It is the big whale who came and rescued the baby whale. The baby didn’t do anything. It is the big whale which is happy on getting back the baby. The baby might not even at times be aware of the danger it was into. The big whale is happy because it is its baby. All that the baby need to do is to KEEP QUITE and NOT jump outside when the big whale is trying to come and save it.

The big mistake we are doing is that we are thinking that we will rescue ourselves.

“SwaPrayojanam, SwaPravirthi’yaiyum Nivarthi panni kolla vendum. So when the BhagavAn Sriman NarayanAn is trying to rescue us, we just need to accept him as our master and NOT seek Anyone else for Help and just need to be quite to reach Moksham ‘SriVaikuntam’.

UPAYAM à ‘Means’ to Moksham is Sriman NarayanAN ThiruvAdi,

UPEYEM à ‘Destination’ is Kainkaryam on Sriman NArayaAn  is the Purushartham.

********************************

2) Piraviyin payan yaathu ?

* To exhaust the karma

* To exhaust the karma one need to ensure that he is doing nothing against shastram. We need to let go things which are not needed. We need to stay away from things which are hindering us in this journey towards bhagawan. Yogi is one who stays away from all things impacting things.

* BhagavAn in Bhagavad Gita also gives us a way to get rid of our Karma “Sarva dharmanam…”. To exhaust the karma, SriKrishna himself says that he will help us in getting rid of the papa/karma and for that all we need to say is “UN THIRUVADIYE THANJAM”. We need to understand and look at the things from HIS perspective.

All we need to do his ACCEPT HIM as the ONLY MASTER and keep quite.

So Perumal gave this Body to help us in exhausting the karma so that HE can get back HIS SOTTHU (ourselves the JeevAThma).

Nan piravi yeduthathin payan yenna ? than sotthai than adaiya padaikirar perumal.

What do we need to do ? we need to accept that we are his sotthu.

All these are part of his Leela.

Leela played as per rule of the game, i.e based on Karma of the jeevatma’s.

So birth/Piravai is based on karma.

Piravi is sorrow.

Than sotthai than adaiya padaikirar perumal.

We need to accept that we are his sotthu.

******************************************

CONCLUSION

The goal of this piravi is to work towards getting out of this samsaram.

Piravi Piravamaikagathan. Moksham poga than piranthom.

Peruman sotthu perumal adaiya pogiran and i should not stop it.

Praptha, Prapagan, Prapthiku ugapanum avan

Adaibavan, adaivipavan, adainthu aananda padubhavanum avan

It is all HIS effort, All I need to do is keep quite.

Perumal Sriman NarayanAn is taking this effort by giving veda’s, azhwars, acharyas, etc.. and HE himself takes avataram’s (Sri Vishnu, Sri Rama, Sri Krishna etc..) so that we get rid of the karmas and get back to him.

So piraviyin payan piravaamai. MOKSHAM ADAIVATHU PIRAVIYIN PAYAN. Moksham adainthu perumanai anubhavikarthu piraviyin payan.

So during this life, we need to do all the other activities/goals too as per Shstras/Vedas as Kainkaryam (Temperory Goal), with the Ultimate goal is MOKSHAM ‘SriVaikuntam’.

“Naam avar sotthu(wealth) yendru unarnthal pothum”.

“Avar muyarchiyil, Avar sotthai , Avar adaiya pogirar”.

Sri Velukkudi Swami says, Swami Ramanujar explained these in HIS Geetha Bashyam.

Srimatae Ramanujaya Namaha,

Bhakta is welcome.

Above references ‘Whale example, Piraviyin payan’ etc… we’re pulled from Swami’s below upanyasams.

1) Yean Piranthen

2) Nettru varai Inbhamum Innalum

3) Indrumudhal Inbhamum Saanthiyum.

All the above 3 are one continous set series.

9 relationships were pulled from ‘Sheshatvam/Srimad Ramayanam pravachanam’.

Prapatti is pulled from Swami’s Sharanagathy upanyasam.

Hope this helps.
