Swamy,

happy to hear this progressive step. While we wait for our Swamy and other members here to share their input, please let me place this humble suggestion. As a first step, she can take freelance kind of work where she can work from home and she is in full control on how much time she wants to put into such work. Then gradually over a year or two she can increase the proportion of devotional work and decrease the proportion of ‘office’ work. And the salary from such work may be completely transferred for Gosala or other devotional services. This will ensure a steady progress. If she suddenly gives up ‘office’ work, she may not be able to engage her mind fully while at home.

Over time she may also get involved in preparing education material for KKT’s abhyasa kendra and rural education program. Only our Swamy can guide us on this.

Thank you.

Swami. Thank you for your reply. Her question was how can she contribute to bhakti and kainkaryam within our home and not doing something outside. So question is “for home” not “from home”. My sincere apologies if I had not put my question correctly.

Dear ntgk swamy, namaskaram. Your question is indeed clear. So no need for apology.

Our swamy has presented a few en pani on the role of ‘illatharasi’ in serving deities , and other devotional engagements at home (eg. #215). This topic has also been presented in some upanyasams available in the form of CDs. Beyond those guidelines common for eveyone, you may be receiving in response to this question specific guidelines to match the skills and interests of your wife. While we wait for such guidelines, I just wanted to caution you to make the transition gradual (may be over a period or 1 or 2 years) intead of making an abrupt change. A gradual transition will be sustainable. Although one may not need ‘office work’ for the money it brings, we definitely need it to keep our mind engaged positively. That is why I took the liberty to make the suggestion. Kindly forgive me if it is inappropriate.

You may also try and recollect how your mother / mother-in-law, grandmothers / grandmothers-in-law engaged in devotional services at home, which will be applicable to your family tradition and family circumstances.

Dear swami. Please do not ask for forgiveness. You are helping me a lot by taking time to answer my question.

Srimate Ramanujaye Namaha,

Swami, i agree gradual transition is sustainable.

And incase if financial need is not a major constraint, there are some roles like a home based tuition center for small children, where they can be taught their school subjects and may be a little on sanatana dharma , ethics and values, on a weekly basis.

Cooking, making flower garlands, making sweets for festivals in extra amount for distribution, cleaning, recitation of paasurams , hearing upanyaasams, these will already take a sizeable amount of time.

Then depending on one’s circumstances, and inclination, other services could be like teaching children, preparing education material on santana dharma, or maintaining a garden/ goshala , learning handicraft/ teaching to make vastram for dieties, learning/teaching music, learning or teaching languages (sanskrit/tamil).. are some possibilities that comes to my mind.

But the exact relevant ones need to be ascertained on one’s own situation and inclination (modes of nature, proportion of sattva , rajas and tamas)

Adiyen
